Virginia is credited with the invention of chapstick. A invention that has had an far greater impact than the chapstick, was the discovery by Dr. Barry Marshall a professor of internal medicine at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, that Heliobacter pylori, was the cause of ulcers. His patented non-invasive tests to detect the presence of H. pylori is now a routine procedure. Barry was a recipient of a Nobel prize for his contribution in the field of medicine. As Barry's patent attorney and friend, I admit to being biased.

Dr. Marshall's discovery was a breakthrough of epic proportions. Logic would tell one that an open sore, or ulcer would be bacterial in origin, yet doctors ignored this, and treated ulcers with drugs which only exacerbated the original cause.
