I see from your portrait that you play tuba, or is that a euphonium. I have a baritone, which I can play but not well. I am currently taking trombone lessons from the trombone professor at BYU. As for photography and poking fun I try not to poke fun at anyone. Not everyone has the same level of expertise on a camera. Lord knows that I am still at the lower level myself. Once in a while I get a good shot but have to wonder....is it because I am a good photographer or is it just luck.

It's a 4 valve compensating euphonium. I also own and play trombone; however, my first passion is playing the euphonium. I was merely poking what I thought was very gentle fun at 'haters of the Nikon Fx 28-300mm lens' with no specific people or names in mind. If I offended anyone, I sincerely apologize.

I'm just curious - what does returning your 28-300 Canon have to do with the Nikon FX 28-300mm that was being discussed?

I think he meant to say Nikon and not Canon.

Let me add my 2 pixels worth to this discussion about the sharpness of the Nikon 28-300mm. The attached photo was, of course, shot with this lens....and handheld as well. There are actually two 'focus stacked' images here, for the first one I focused on the saguaro on the right side, then changed the focus to the larger saguaro in the middle of the frame. These were then processed with Combine ZP to form the final image. Some very minor tweaking was done in Photoshop...cropped slightly, etc.

Be sure to take a look at the full sized image ("original") and examine the 'sharpness'...(no pun intended, even though it would have been a good one!)...of the spines on the right hand plant....and then have a look at the cactus in the center of the photo.... I know we all have different standards, but for the work I do, this lens has really filled my needs for about 85% of all of my shots and the impact of this shot has been well received by many others. The wonderful light at day's end only adds to the scenic quality...IMHO.

Sharpness looks good to me kskarma! Some people (not me) like photographs that are SO sharpened one could practically cut their finger on it (again sarcasm); however, that's a whole another discussion.

That was a fun time. I'm looking forward to getting together again. Keep in mind though, I grant anyone the ability to have an opinion. What works for some may not work for everyone. If one has an opinion at least base it on personal experience or dedicated research. However, just because <fill in your favorite reviewer or lab> says something, may or may not be something on which to hang your hat.

As for humor, I'll probably poke more fun at myself than anyone else. It is a good thing to share a good laugh with good friends. Share is far better than at someone else's expense.

Where (in what ensemble) are you playing Euphonium? I think there is a definite tie in between musical performance and photography. Play on and keep taking photos!!

I play in Desert Overture, a local wind symphony in Phoenix consisting of 50-60 performers. For what I've spent on musical instruments I could have afforded the holy trinity of Nikon lenses. But, having one more than one hobby ( I have 3 as I also do stitchery- mostly long stitch needlepoint and counted cross-stitch), eats up the wallet.

I'm so glad you settled this issue. I can sleep tonight knowing that I won't wake up to another 50 posts about it. Maybe I'm already asleep and I'm dreaming.

Here are 3 of my photos taken with this lens that have taken 1st place in the PRO division at our Arizona State Fair. I figure if it's good enough for the judges (and people I sell to), then it's good enough for me. I'm not saying it's a GREAT lens but I think it's certainly good enough or 'viable' to be used as an all around or travel lens (for those that ask about it). BTW...all 3 photos including the moon shots were taken handheld.

If you are satisfied with it, that is all that matters. 👍

I think the only thing DesRose and I unanimously agreed upon was not meeting at Denny's again. But, that wasn't the original plan anyway. Power outage due to a storm forced that decision.

I was totally joking or being sarcastic when I made that comment... as if two Ugly Hedgehoggers meeting for lunch could settle a debate once and for all on any issue. Right or wrong I assumed people would see the humor in my comment.

Whatever lens works for you is the one you should have. I retain my bias against the fallacy of the "all-in-one" theory, but respect other views on it. Glad you had a good lunch. Sounds like you had fun.
