That was a fun time. I'm looking forward to getting together again. Keep in mind though, I grant anyone the ability to have an opinion. What works for some may not work for everyone. If one has an opinion at least base it on personal experience or dedicated research. However, just because <fill in your favorite reviewer or lab> says something, may or may not be something on which to hang your hat.

As for humor, I'll probably poke more fun at myself than anyone else. It is a good thing to share a good laugh with good friends. Share is far better than at someone else's expense.

Let me add my 2 pixels worth to this discussion about the sharpness of the Nikon 28-300mm. The attached photo was, of course, shot with this lens....and handheld as well. There are actually two 'focus stacked' images here, for the first one I focused on the saguaro on the right side, then changed the focus to the larger saguaro in the middle of the frame. These were then processed with Combine ZP to form the final image. Some very minor tweaking was done in Photoshop...cropped slightly, etc.

Be sure to take a look at the full sized image ("original") and examine the 'sharpness'...(no pun intended, even though it would have been a good one!)...of the spines on the right hand plant....and then have a look at the cactus in the center of the photo.... I know we all have different standards, but for the work I do, this lens has really filled my needs for about 85% of all of my shots and the impact of this shot has been well received by many others. The wonderful light at day's end only adds to the scenic quality...IMHO.

I've come to avoid saying "That settles that once and for all" on UHH because, I believe, we all know the debate about this lens will go on and on. That said, KKH's image and story (both here and in its parent thread: https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-532039-1.html) sure offer visual proof that extremely sharp images can be had with this lens. Thanks for posting.

Where (in what ensemble) are you playing Euphonium? I think there is a definite tie in between musical performance and photography. Play on and keep taking photos!!

Andy, Bob, Cameraf4....thanks to you for your 'spot on' observations and tolerant attitudes... The important thing in all of this is that we develop a set of gear, approaches, procedures and processes that get the results that 'fit' each person on here. While I can....and do...often respond to a question about "how do YOU do this...or that?"....I certainly can't ever say that my opinion or advice fits YOUR situation. Some of the extensive threads on UHH that offer tons of conflicting advice..."You MUST do...or buy...or operate....in this manner...", seem to me that, without knowing the goals and limitations of each camera user, it's just impossible to set any kind of rigid rule or advice. So that's MY advice......grins...!

Exactly. Sorting the wheat from the chaff is sometimes difficult if you don't have confidence in your opinions or background in the subject matter. Which, of course, is precisely why you might be asking the question in the first place.

I agree on this point - the more definitive and proscriptive the advice, the less reliable it may be. Those who recognize that answers might be different for different people are the ones I trust the most.

YES: "You really can't stop the trolls. They thrive on your reaction and if you respond, they have you."

I put it this way: Do not feed the trolls.

They thrive on you reaction and if you respond, they have you. Great line from a movie it doesn't matter what others think its when you start believing what they say:)

BTW - I returned my 28-300 Canon for poor image quality after three days. Others have to judge for themselves whether it meets their needs.

I don't like to criticize others photos because I know mine are not always the greatest but the total sharpness of the saguaro on the right draws my attention away from the rest of the picture. Not to say you are wrong - just my opinion.

Regarding the Nikon FX 28-300mm zoom lens we settled opinions once and for all (for the haters out there) that this lens IS viable as a good walk around/travel lens. :

I'm so glad you settled this issue. I can sleep tonight knowing that I won't wake up to another 50 posts about it. Maybe I'm already asleep and I'm dreaming.

I agree- trash talk and degrading others are unacceptable.

I have the Nikkor 28 - 300 mm lens and I'm happy with mine. I know some people are not. It seems to me that is one of 2 causes:
1) Perhaps there is some variability between copies of the lens. Given modern Japanese QA techniques and procedures, that seems unlikely to me. Or,
2) Some of us (me included) just are not demanding as other people. I'm not a pixel peeper, so perhaps I just can't tell the difference.

In any event, I've printed a number of photos at A3 size that I shot with that lens, and I'm happy with the results, as were the recipients of the prints. So criticize all you like, but I'm keeping my lens! 😊 Cheers, Don

In my opinion and experience, those “superzooms” are fine for casual snapshots. But fall way short for professional applications. However, whatever lens one decides to use, is their business and I don’t care. Poke away. 👍

Here are 3 of my photos taken with this lens that have taken 1st place in the PRO division at our Arizona State Fair. I figure if it's good enough for the judges (and people I sell to), then it's good enough for me. I'm not saying it's a GREAT lens but I think it's certainly good enough or 'viable' to be used as an all around or travel lens (for those that ask about it). BTW...all 3 photos including the moon shots were taken handheld.

I was totally joking or being sarcastic when I made that comment... as if two Ugly Hedgehoggers meeting for lunch could settle a debate once and for all on any issue. Right or wrong I assumed people would see the humor in my comment.
