May want to read this and other reviews like it out there. It seems this is a very good IQ lens IF you get a good copy. Also the use of glue and plastic may mean it will degrade over time as I have read in a couple of reviews.

"LensRentals did a review and Samyang/Rokinon/Bower lenses and they are all the same company sold under different names. LensRental's conclusion is that they are great value but the quality control and materials used are awful. While most lenses use metal, screws, and heavy calibration, Rokinon lenses make extensive use of plastics and GLUE! The result is copy variation is VERY INCONSISTENT and a lot of internal elements that move around, break, or move out of position and alignment. LensRentals says that Rokinon/Samyangs are the most frequently repaired lenses they have. With these lenses, you are essentially getting the luck of the draw with the lens lottery. You might get a superb copy with outstanding sharpness, or you might end up like me with a potato. MAKE SURE YOU TEST EXTENSIVELY before you decide to keep!!!!"

I look at this way you purchased a great camera why put anything less in front of the Sony sensor than GREAT glass
That said
People all the time “settle” for a lesser glass for many reasons, me personally, I’d rather go without for a while than get less than awesome images due to not so great glass!

I agree with you but I need to check with my finance minister. Thank you. Shang

Ditto CatMarley for the Samyang 12/2. Definitely a keeper.

I use Samyang 6.5, 14, 24, 35, 50, 85 and 135mm lenses (adapted from Canon EF mount) with both an A7S and A7R II. Really like them all; however, the 14, 35 and 135mm are my favorites.

Obviously you have never looked at the ultra wide Rokinon/Samyang lenses. When compared to zeiss, they came out sharper, and faster. You can always pay more, but you don't make better images. Here is a review of the 12 mm which I have and highly recommend. https://petapixel.com/2014/06/04/review-rokinon-12mm-f2-0-great-option-astrophotogs-budget/

We are talking about lenses for a Sony full-frame camera. Different ballgame. Plus OP already is looking at the Samyang 14mm full-frame. That one has very mediocre reviews.

I have the Samyang 14mm f2.8. I use it on my a99ii and a7s. I use it for might shots because it is faster than my Sigma 12-24mm. It is pretty good. This is a 20sec shot.

Jeffcs DONT BE A LENS SNOB !! I am a pro of over 40 years and can afford the best I want. I have Sony A7RIII, A7III and A6500. I own BOTH great Sony G-Master glass and great Sigma Art glass among my 12 lenses. There is quality glass for Sony E-Mount from more makers than just Sony and Zeiss. Tamron, Samyang/Rokinon and others are making quality glass that pros are buying and using on their best Sony cameras. Dont knock the other glass unless you have shot with them, like many other pros and I have. Cheers

I’m certainly not being a lens snob, and am new to Sony. I’m not downing any lens in particular. What I’m trying to convey is quality camera sensor needs great glass or you’ll not get all of the quality your camera can produce. In my day of shooting pro with film we used the lowest asa and the best glass we could afford my Hasselblad has hassy glass all of my 35mm was Nikkor glass and still is! Oh I guess I am a lens snob!!!

My point was there are loads of quality glass lenses made for Sony E-Mount that aren't made by Sony. If you would shoot with some and check numerous real-world reviews and tests, then you would know that. Some of my Sigma Art glass outscores some Sony G-master glass for ultimate image quality and sharpness, and at much less cost. Tamron and others like Samyang/Rokinon etc. likewise are making great quality and more affordable glass for E-Mount. I also just bought the new Sigma Art 70mm f2.8 Macro in E-Mount (the first Sigma Art series macro) and it is stunning for my A7RIII and A7III, as great IQ as any of the best macros I have used from Sony, Nikon, or Canon. Here are two shots made with this new Sigma Art 70mm f2.8 Macro lens in E-Mount. These are jpegs, shot handheld in natural light, straight out of the camera, with NO post processing and NO noise reduction. Fly shot with A7RIII at f8, ISO 800. Dragonfly shot with A7III at f22, ISO 6000. This lens will also make a great short-tele portrait lens, and it was half the cost of the comparable 90mm f2.8 macro from Sony. (I have the Sony G-Master 85mm f1.4, but will also use this super-sharp Sigma lens for portraits). Cheers

True. As you state, the camera/sensor will not
produce the ultimate of its capabilities without
the best of everything everywhere along the
image producing chain.

The three main reasons that there is a thriving
market for less than ideal lenses are:

1. Cost.
2. Most shooting situations do not support the
demonstration of the ultimate capabilities of
the best lenses.
3. Image quality is a minor contributor to the
making of successful, interesting photographs.

I would tend to agree with you in 2 & 3. I don’t really understand why cost factor would come befor quality please note I’m not wealthy. But why start off with less than perfect tools.
And than you have to add the human factor!

Two quick responses to the posts by gwilliams6 and User ID.

gwilliams6 writes: "My point was there are loads of quality glass lenses made for Sony E-Mount that aren't made by Sony." Agreed. The Sigma Art or the Zeiss series are good examples. There also are some interesting niche players. BTW: these two sample pictures are great and make your point. (My problem with the Sigma Art lenses is that they all weigh well over a pound, and some over two pounds, but that this my own personal bias.) In fact, you convinced me to take a close look at the Sigma 70mm f/2.8 Macro over the Sony 90mm f/2.8 Macro--it is lighter, cheaper and apparently just as good.

But some lenses are, well, mediocre. According to the reviews, the Rokinons are in this category. Although I have been considering the Rokinon AF 24mm f/2.8 FE over the Zeiss Batis 25mm just because it is so small (120g)--still sitting on the fence on that one.

This brings me to User ID's post. He makes three good points, and I agree with all of them. But then the same three points also apply to the camera body. Why buy a Sony A7 III if you could buy a cheap, mediocre or even good camera for the fraction of the price? So we have come full circle. Why buy a Sony A7 III (or any other fine full-frame camera) if you are not willing to put lenses of equal quality on it?
