Does anyone use a string to hold their lens cap when shooting or anything else to hold the cap outside of your pocket? I feel safer with the string holding the cap.
Tried it once hated it
That is why I use hood and UV filter and leave the cap in the bag until I put the lens away.
I had a lens cap with the string attached. I found it to be a nuisance, so I took it off and resorted to my old way of doing things: putting the cap in my pocket. I also have a tendency to lose lens caps, so I buy them when I lose them (they are cheap enough!).
A funny story: I was at Bad Water Basin in Death Valley (the lowest point in the Continental USA); I took the lens cap off of my Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 and a gust of winds blew the cap out of my hand and across the board walk (or whatever they call it); I took off after the lens cap, only to have it fall between the cracks in the walk. When I got home I ordered a generic lens cap. I received a Canon lens cap for my Tamron lens that is on my Nikon camera.

I use a string on my bridge fixed lens camera because it won't accept a lens hood. On my DSLR's I use lens hoods or just no cap at all. Optical glass is much more durable than people give it credit for. I have never scratched a lens. Tony Northrup explains this as he whacks the hell of a lens and then takes pictures with it and you can't tell.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YcZkCnPs45s I cannot hadle the lens cap! I will lose it every time and fast.

What if you don't have a lens bag?
Then you will have to buy a lens cap bag.
One of the first things our professor told us is, "As soon as you remove the lens cap, put in a safe and secure place such as a pocket. Always put it in the same place every time. Never use one of those strings that attach to your lens. They are a big distraction and can cause vibration."
I use a piece of velcro on my lens caps and sewed one to my strap. A string to keep it from being knocked off, which they have done.
This is what I use. Haven't lost one yet

Having my lens cap tethered is a nuance!
I can't believe I just read 7 pages of lens cap replies!!!! Hysterical!!
Im in the less popular - i love my cap keeper(s) have one on every lens and love sharing them. I have seen here on UHH that most people do not like cap keepers, works for me - never had an issue - I'm sure i will miss THAT shot now that i just said it's never happened to me .... hahahah I do like the idea of the velcro on the lens and lens cap .... might have give that a try in the future!! Happy day to all!!!
I don't think my camera has worn its lens cap in several years. I do know where it is, though.
I have tried both methods. Cap in the pocket is the best! I got annoyed with the dangling cap as Linda from Maine explained.

I also keep it in my pocket.
I just stick it in my pocket or back in camera bag where lens is placed for carrying.

My lenses are stored in a dry cabinet until they go into a camera bag for shooting. When I'm out, after choosing a lens, I put the front and rear cap in the bag where the lens came out of. When I am done with that lens, front and rear caps go back on and the lens is put back in the bag. After returning home, lens goes back in dry cabinet after cleaning. Strings and any other such devise has always become an annoyance and take away from my shooting style.
