I found this message on the monitor of my Nikon SLR:
"This memory card cannot be used. Card may be damaged. Insert another card"
Anyone have a suggestion or two?

I don't want to frighten you but this can be the first step in failure of the card reader inside the camera. Had it happen not too long ago to me. But it's quite possibly the contacts on the card as well.
First - try another card. See if you get the same message. If this is a newer or faster card than you have used in the past, then try one of lower speed and capacity.
Second - If you still get the message, clean the card contacts inside the camera port, using alcohol and a lint free swab.
Third - send it to Nikon USA if it's worth the expense. If not, then look on the bright side - time for a body upgrade!
I hope it's the card!

See if your computer can read the card. If it can't, then the card is the problem.

True 90% of the time, but I've had at least one card that wouldn't read in the camera but would in the computer and one vice versa. The cards are pretty durable, the readers are sometimes a little flimsier, I think.

I’ve had this happen a couple of times with my D500. My solution was to remove and then carefully re-insert the SD card. It fixed the problem for me. If that hadn’t worked, I would have cleaned the contacts on the card and tried again.
Saw this problem numerous times when using Nikon SRLs at Seaworld images could sometimes be recovered with recovery software. Cards most times could be read with different card reader and could be reformatted in a Canon and work fine
Blow out the camera's card compartment. Sometimes "stuff" gets in there.
SD cards are inexpensive get a new one. But most cards have a lifetime warranty contact the maker
If it is a large capacity card, check to be sure your camera will accept that size card. Some cameras only accept up to a certain capacity card (I.E. 32GB).

Did you check to make sure the card is not locked? (Little slider on the side of the card).

I wouldn't trust that card, but try this. Format the card in your computer. Then insert it into the camera and see if accepts it. You'll have to format it again in the camera, of course. Still, I wouldn't trust that card. Actually, I'd probably use it around the house just to test it. If there are no more warnings, I'd put it back into the regular rotation. This is why I like cameras with two card slots.

Is this a new card for this camera? Was it working before?
What camera model?
What card brand and model?
If it had worked in that camera before, use a pencil eraser to clean the card's contact going parallel to the contacts, not across. Be gentle.

I had one card where one of the tiny little plastic "fingers" between contacts on the card had become bent. Straightened it out and card still working fine.
I got a similar message on my Olympus EM-1 for cards that were used on previous cameras. I reformatted the cards and the camera was able to see, read and write to them.
