Superb portrait shot Graham, beautifully processed and full of ‘county market’. I used to live fairly close to the Heygates mill in Northamptonshire years ago!

The sign is part of the story - it adds to the overall effect in my opinion (I was going to add in my previous note that I was glad you left it in ;) I love the fact that these guys were not posing but in a natural setting that you captured "a moment in time" - really love it ( I keep coming back and looking at it!)

For purposes of instruction and interest in how others perceive elements, would you talk about why you think it should have been removed, Bob? Or perhaps I'm just inferring that you'd prefer it gone because of the way you worded the question. In which case, I'll go back to my corner now

Sure, glad to share my ignorance! I look at work, my own and others', asking what elements (content, colors, shapes, composition----) would add to the point if taken out, and which could be used to strengthen the impact. In this photo, where the pic was taken seems to add nothing, and its light value pulls my eye away from the intense looks of the men.

Thank you!

As I tested my theory after writing a response to you, I found that simply cropping out the top part of the sign didn't do what I wanted, either. I'll PM my "final edit."

Excellent tone and composition Graham !!! My observation is while the facial expression on the four gentlemen are somewhat similar, their body language is different. The position of the three in front and the one in the rear creates an interesting and strong composition. Sort of like a tier so to speak and if this was candid (which I assume it was) makes this an even more interesting and well observed on your part to capture this image. I like it very much.

Very nice character study rendered in your signature edgy monochrome. Two aspects of this photo inspire me to ask if they were accidental or deliberate. Firstly, the sharpest focus appears to be on the near surface of the metal railing rather than on the subjects eyes. Second, two of the men appear to be intently studying the cattle on offer while the other two are looking directly into the camera. Was this accidental, or did you wait for this to happen?
