If you insist on manual focus, and it’s available for your model Canon, you can always download and install Magic Lantern (free). One of its many useful features is focus peaking. https://magiclantern.fm/

Do any of the current Canon dslr cameras incorporate a manual focusing system like the old slr's?

Yes they all do, for split screen, you'll have to change the focus sreen, many models allow for it, it's very easy to do!

It means the same today as it did when it was posted here.

What were you looking for in this 5 year old thread?

Often these days, I do use my old Pentax film camera, and do have its split image available, but I use it only so much. My eyes do a fairly good job of recognizing ‘in focus’, and I usually operate with apertures which provide wide ‘in focus’.

It's a tool.
Know what you want and the specs for getting there.
These days I'm shooting still or maybe slow people, so:
Set ISO, Set aperture (for DoF) and Set aperture priority.
Manual Focus!
I almost always get the total results I wanted.
Little to no PP necessary.
