Yes, Jerry, same for me. Another definition of a close friend is someone you'd lend money to without a moments hesitation and knowing full well that they'd pay you back. I had a few of these friends years back but some moved, some died.

To take it further, lend and forget it knowing they would do the same. When they have the money you WILL get it back. If I may, a story about why a former friend is,former. He is interested in mushrooms,insects,herps restoring skeletons. He gets protected sea animals from people running some major labs, restores, and returns museum specimens. I have seen seals,porpoise, all five sea turtles, his lab has a computer microscope and camera . I made his oval bases grattus, cherry, Walnut, whatever, just to do my part. My microscope and a large library is now his. History. Why are we not friends? He tracks mud into my third floor condo(I do not have a house keeper). He put his hat on my dining table, along with the drink I gave him( he rarely brought). He left the W/C seat up, he denegrated and insulted me often. When I said something I was petty, trite, wrong, you get the picture. He was like a shrew wife. One day I told him to get the( your word here) out. No reason given,or asked,he has never come back or called. I cannot grasp that. To get to the end, a friend is a person with whom you share mutual respect. The level of friendship even with the respect. Bill I did not say, but the last of my friends like the one you mentioned just died last month

I would even take it further to say that a close friend is someone to whom you would lend money without the expectation that it be paid back. If it is paid back then all the better and unexpected. If not, no worries so long as it does not become a "habit" to which the friendship would begin to be under scrutiny.

I, too, have had a similar experience with a "friend" with whom I helped start a business. The business was struggling, I ended up on welfare as I had a family to nurture, and he obtained a loan from his father-in-law to help keep the business afloat. When the discussion of how the funds were to be dispersed, he covered the salary he would receive but nothing for me. When I asked why, the response was, "Well, you are receiving welfare and I thought to save the company money, you could just continue with that until we got back on our feet." That was the end of that friendship though I still wonder how he is doing. I do know that he has been through multiple bankruptcies since then.

This morning was great for me. First time I get to see someone, who I have not see in at least 25 years, We were in high school together (Class of 1965) He has been in the area visting his brother. Only talk to each other for a short time. But in that short time those 25 years never happen. It was great.
