On ebay the 18-200 II are going for slightly more than that so I would say they are giving you a good price on your 18-200. I would also suggest the latest version of the 70-300 E, it seems to be the best of these types of lenses.

sxrich...these are the type of images that should be shown to folks every time they want to upgrade to the latest and greatest "whatever". It is also why my upgrades are so much slower and lower than a lot of other folks upgrades.... Great images are not about the money, they are about technique. Good Job!! (even if a while back).

I have and use both of these lenses on my D7100. My experience is that I use the 18-200 as my go to multi purpose lens about 70% of the time while I tend to use the 70-300 for wildlife and sports about 30% of the time. In short if I were forced to chose one it would be the 18-200. However at the prices you're talking, why not have both.

If you need the 300mm focal length your purchase in my opinion is justified. The 18-200 VR is what is called a walk around lens. It comprises those focal lengths that are often used by photographers with a tele zoom that are useful for distant subjects and some wildlife photography.
I own both lenses which I use for different purposes. My 70-300 with my D7000 serves as a moderate tele for wildlife photography or action in good light while the 18-200 is my walk around lens.
Much has been written about the 18-200 VR, many of those "reviews" with negative comments like the creeping when the lens is extended and holding the camera up or down. If the lens is retracted there is no creeping, not that it bothers me. The second generation, with the same optics, has a switch to keep the lens retracted. More money for the same optics.
If I did not have mine I would be buying yours.

The deal sounds reasonable. But only you know if what you give up by trading the 18-200 is worth what you get by buying the 70-300. What you shoot frequently will aid in dictating your decision.

IDguy Loc: Idaho

The 70-300 is a new AF-P lens. They only work with newer Nikon cameras or some slightly older ones with a firmware update. You don’t mention your camera.

Check compatibilty before you buy.

Your shots are beautiful. I especially liked the butterfly. They are all really sharp. I have the 70-300 and love it, but the 70mm is a little too long for using as a general lens. Just ordered the Nikon 24-85 to give me a little more flexibility. I mostly shoot landscapes and family shots. I like the 70-300 for shooting my grandkids at swim meets. I can track them from one end of the pool to the other and get some great action shots.

I sure wouldn't trade my 18-200 in. It is practically the only lens I use on my Nikons, and I have about 8 Nikon lenses.

I agree with missing the 18-70 especially on a crop sensor. But, he may have other lenses so it's really a personal choice.

I have both the FX 70-300 VR and the DX 70-300 AF-P . I also own a 300mm F4 VR PF, a much more expensive (and prime lens) and a 200 -500 f5.6. I also got a lot of great pictures with the FX 70-300. It's quite sharp up to about 240mm. However, as 300mm is approached this lens is notably soft. By comparison, the much newer technology DX AF-P 70-300 VR is not only sharper at the long end, the VR is more effective, it focuses faster, and it is much lighter in weight. In addition you can buy one for about $150 gray market, which is a bargain (In my opinion the non VR model is all but useless and Nikon should be ashamed to package it in kits). Nowadays I only use the AF-P model on my D7100 and am very happy with it, except for serious bird photography where I use the 300mm f4 or the 200-500 f5.6. My FX 70 - 300 is hardly used at all, and only with an FX camera.

In short, for DX buy the DX AF-P 70 - 300 and NOT the FX 70-300. The even newer FX AF-P 70 -300 is a better lens than either of the other 70 -300 lenses but it costs $750. When your budget allows, you can get that one, but for now the DX AF-P 70 - 300 is the one to get.
