Stick to the A-B-C's: Adorama, B&H, Calumet

You may be thinking of 47th St. photo, which was a reputable store back in the day. I think 42nd St. Photo may be using that name hoping people remember 47th St.

You may very well be right. I did not have a particularly good experience with them, but they weren't crooked, as far as I know.

I will say that I have gotten some decent bargains on used gear from Abe's at local "in the flesh" equipment shows. But I checked each item carefully and kept one hand on my wallet at all times.

I tend to stick with B&H. Never been disappointed with their inventory or pricing or customer service. Have dealt with them for over a decade and haven't had any negative issues. They have a good used equipment inventory and of course a very knowledgable staff. No, I don't work for them, just a satisfied customer.

Welcome to the forum.
You did right by asking the experienced members here before taking a chance on a place questionable.
I live in Texas and have no experience with these places but this question and these New York foto shops have been a subject of conversation many times.
PLEASE be careful, when you see a cheater than thou add, there is a reason. These members know.
What is a few bucks, which to to me is chump change, compared to purchasing from a KNOWN RELIABLE store these folks all about. So, if you go with a low baller cheap ass join you usually get what you paid for which could probable disappoint you in the long run so you wind up spending too much time and frustration trying to recover.
Yea, welcome and please read the advise from these knowledgeable members who know.
You made the right call to check here first, glad you did.
Happy shopping and good shooting.

For the past several years, I have used greentoe.com. You name your price on many different items, ie, photography, appliances, home tvs theater, drones, etc., and they will try to find someone who will accept your price. They have even gotten back to me with suggestions to raise my price a bit and they have someone who will accept.

No grey items, all US warranties. I usually save about 3-8 percent over prices listed at other places, including Adorama and B&H.

At least take a look

B&H and Adorama are very good places to buy your stuff. Stay away from those other two.

It’s very simple - stick to the ABC’s - Adorama, B&H and Cameta - there is a very good reason why they dominate the industry and have sky high consumer ratings.

I patronize a brick and mortar store. A good store, with a good staff, is worth paying the few extra dollars you would otherwise pay for an online retail store. I'm not against Adorama or 42nd Street. Infact I've talked to many happy customers. But they work best when you know precisely what you want. I like browsing, talking and feeling the merchandise. An established brick and mortar has an interest and keeping their customers happy.

If you are trying to save money, I recommend you go to the manufacturer's website and search for refurbished equipment. This equipment is not damaged, but rather mostly returned inventory from dealers that they didn't want to carry anymore. Good luck.

I always use B&H or Adorama, friendly knowledgeable people, good prices, and generous return policies. Just easy to deal with all around and if they don't have it, you probably don't need it. Over 15 years experience with them and not one problem.
