Isn't a husband/father always at the end of the chain of command?  The only one that listens to me is my dog. Sometimes.

Every time a new grand child arrives, we dads move down a rung on the ladder.

Remember, the Chain of Command is only as strong as it's weakest link!

In my experience many people take photos at a wedding. If the couple does not want that, they can set a proscription against it, but I doubt many would do that. At most there key be a request not to use flash during the ceremony itself.

I agree. If a pro is hired to shoot a wedding stay out of the way. But as you stated a lot of people attending a wedding will carry a camera. Taking your photos is fine but let the pro do their job.

It would be in your best interest to leave your camera at home

As a professional wedding photographer for 35 + years I have in my contract that there will be no cameras used during the ceremony or the following posed photos. I am paid for a service and will not allow people to steal my work. I do the posing and this is why I get paid. I will tell the guest that if there is time after I'm done shooting they can take as many photos they want but I will not pose them. There have been times when I lost control of the guests and told them If they continue to shoot I will sit down until they are finished and if our time frame is up the Bride and Groom will not get any professional photographs. When I do this I stand on the alter with the Bride and Groom and they let me do my job.

I don't mind the guests making photos as long as they stay out of my way. I try to get the bride to ask the guests to let the hired photographers take their photo first, "And then we'll stay posed for the guests to get pictures". Looking Pro really helps. I use the tripod whenever I'm stationary, and wear a black shirt with "Roger Engle Photography" embroidered in teal on the back. I often have my flash on its own light stand for the formals. Whenever possible I try not to block the guest's view of what is happening.

That's where a nice zoom comes in handy. I can get all the candids I want without ever getting in anyone's way.

Absolutely NOT. The only role the father of the bride has is financial and moral. But the more pressing question is why would you want to? This is one of the most important days of your daughter's life; it is not about you or an opportunity for you to take pictures---hire someone to do this. It sounds ironic since you will be paying for it, but you have to look at it like a gift. You don't give someone something, and then use it for your own interests.

Just my opinion.

Always have a camera with you even if you don't use it. You never know what might happen.

I beg to differ! Since when is any man in charge at a wedding? Just try to cross the bride and her mother, and watch the sparks fly! ;)

You ain't kidding! Been there, done that. I will never shoot another wedding and hopefully will not attend one. Especially my own.   Although I did meet my future ex-wife in Destin, FL. last week.

You're too easily trained.
Nobody said anything about crossing anyone, just effective deployment of some subtle diplomatic skills to assert your head of household position.
Use it or lose it! 8-)
