The new iPad is the 800 pound gorilla of the pad market. It has, by far, the best screen in a pad device, likely much better than your computer screen, unless you have one of the new MacBooks.

The new iPad is completely ideal for photographers, and surpasses all other pad devices in this regard. It's all about the screen and the enormous available photo apps.

In general, apps come to the iPad first, then filter down to the lesser brands. The nothing short of incredible new integration of the Mac's new operating system with all things iPad, iPhone, and iPod make the iPad a no brainer for anyone using Macs. In the magazine and advertising worlds, Macs have ruled for decades.

As to storage, eventually, let us hope soon, carbon storage will arrive. Petabytes for everyone in sizes so small packaging will be an issue.

Thank you, thank you!! I had no idea there was an iPad camera kit. I just googled it and can't wait to get one. I've been using my iPad to showcase my work to prospective clients and at networking events and everyone is very impressed but it's been a pain to only be able to sync from my desktop. I just may drop by the Apple store on my way to my day job today. Thanks again!

I have to agree that the iPad is the way to go. I Just got back from a long motorcycle vacation. I took my canon S100 and my iPad. With the iPad camera kit, I was able to transfer & view all my pics, edit what I wanted to with iPhoto and even post some on Facebook while I was on my trip. It was great being able to do all of that easily on my iPad. Love it!

Flipping the pages of photo mags and there seems to be some buzz about Tablets (I Pads and such) being a great tool for photographers. So I have to ask, do you have one if so, what? Do you love it? Pros of having one? Has it changed your hobbie? I'm not looking to hear about the features of yours or why I should get one, but rather how has it added to you as a photographer and if feel well needed tool added to your camera bag.? Thanks in advance.

I have been using an iPad exclusively for all of my photographic needs since they first came out a few years ago and would be "lost" without one! I can't really think of any cons, but there are a gazillion (that's a lot by the way) pros to using one for your photographic requirements. They are particularly great for travel photography. Having said all that, I am not a professional photographer but it is rather an enjoyable hobby for me and I can certainly understand the pro's needing a more extensive bag of tools for their endeavors!

I have a Motorola Zoom and all I use it for is a digital portfolio. Excellent screen resolution and color.

I am a loyal Mac user and each member of my family (3) has an iPad. They are a great tool for accessing forums, sites, video tutorials, et. al. On the subject of photography. They are obviously very portable, in fact I'm writing to you on my pad right now while watching UAE and Uruguay Olympic Soccer or "Football". I highly recommend one. I would also recommend an iMac computer for post processing as they are essentially designed for graphic arts, etc. it also helps that by brother-in-law is a Mac (Apple) systems administrator.

Try to stay away from other tablets. These company's are trying to copy "Apple's" incredible product.

Apple may have been the first, but they are not the only tablet game in town, and many others have features that may fit the way you use it better. Thank goodness we have copy-cats. If we didn't, Apple would have no incentive to improve their product while others try to innovate and offer more for less. Competition is a good thing.

Regarding the tablet as it relates to photography... it's pretty limited. Sure, you can preview your photos and easily share them with your friends or clients, but that's about the extent of it. As flyfisher noted, you still need another computer for post processing, and based on the price point of the iPad, you can put that towards a pretty nice laptop, ultrabook or a MacBook Pro that will be far more useful in the long run.

iPads are fun toys, and it seems many professionals have them these days, but most of those professionals didn't pay for them.

I like my toshiba thrive. I can take the sd card from my camera, put it in the thrive and view my shots on the 10" screen and check for anything I may have not noticed in camera.
Its the only tablet that was ableto take an sd card. ( as of last yr when I purchased it )

I bought a small netbook for $299 a few years ago. It has 120 GB of memory, and I can run Photoshop. When I go on vacation, I transfer pictures off of my SD cards through the built in card reader slot, and can edit some pictures on the flight home. Show me a tablet with 120 GB memory, an SD card slot, that can run PS, for under $300...my display IS inferior, but it isn't that bad!

And there you go. All easily resolved on a Netbook... Not so much on a tablet.

Netbook has a standard VGA port to hook up any good monitor. Has the standard outfit of USB ports, so I hook mine up to a 23 inch monitor, standard keyboard and mouse on my desk. I can also hook up an optical drive for data transfer or app loading if not from the internet. All this without the exta cost adapter to make USB work on the tablet. I can download Android from Google and load it dual boot on my netbook, ie running Windows 7, and the tablet interface. If I buy a 23 inch touch screen monitor, I have all the features of a tablet. The google Android OS can run as a second O/S on a regular computer.

So again, I have a productivity oriented computer,
AND a tablet with all the fun things...

"Hey Dano, did you get those prints over to the lab, and did they run that DNA you took to the lab last night and get you a report on your Tablet this morning, while you were showering?"

Sorry folks, but all the "love" I see here about iPads is still not enough to convince me to dig out the plastic for the tablet system. That 320 Gb storage INSIDE my netbook is the biggest over-riding factor. And, now that I found out I can use my netbook with the Android OS dual boot, how ya gonna convince me?

Hmmm.......?

And now, the other nail in the lid favoring the netbook. I just found out I can convert my netbook to a touch screen, and they are now selling netbooks that come with the touch screens.

I use my tablet simply as a travelling portfolio for potential clients. I find it is a great way for my work to be viewed the way I intended. Previously I used Dvd and Bluray slides but found the quality differed depending on the players and ultimately the Tv they had in their homes. By using a tablet I have also found clients are more comfortable being able to meet at coffee shops etc. If you where thinking that tablets had any editing benifets then I believe no. They are howevere good for storage but still do not beat a notebook for space. Goodluck and enjoy.

Yes you can! Download the iCab Mobile web browser application from the app store for a few bucks, access the Ugly Hedgehog website through iCab Mobile and you will then find that the buttons to upload photo files will no longer be "grayed" out and you can post pix to the hog!

Not so! If you have the camera connection kit for the iPad ( about $30) you can easily transfer still and video files directly from the SD card to the iPad and that has been true since the first iPad hit the market a few years ago!

Exactly my point, sure you can transfer sd to i-pad. But they make you pay ANOTHER 30 or 40 bucks to do it.
( how much more will they charge you to change your battery ? )

I have the ASUS Transformer Prime with keyboard (I'm anti-apple). I settled on this device because of it's 8mp built in camera. I have downloaded camera and editing apps that are cool toys, but if you're after quality photos and/or editing, it's still a toy.

Sure, there are those who will go to the extremes to show the ability of their tablet, but I rely on my camera and laptop in the end.

This unit with it's 10inch screen is nice to view photos on, but it's a pain to use it as a camera. It's hard to pack the device along when a camera hangs around your neck or fits in your pocket.

Hope this helps,
Jack

I too have an iPad with the camera connection kit, and I too am writing this on my iPad. I use a couple of editing apps on my ipad (snapseed, photogene and photoshop touch among others) and while none of them can compete with the productivity or workflow of program's like photoshop and bridge it is a great device for looking at photos on the move on a larger screen and for doing basic edits before uploading to Flickr and Facebook etc. one point I would make in line with what someone else said is don't take your images off the card during the import as the iPad shrinks the file size, so if u want a full size copy of the image re upload them when you get back home to your pc or laptop. When I go away from home I always take my iPad and our laptop, which conveniently has CS5 and bridge on it I also have a mobile wifi device from tmobile so am ready for any eventuality, am starting to think I may be overdoing it though lol but hey I do love a gadget :)
