Thanks..actually on Amazon UK it is even cheaper as it's £7.65. Might get it. There's is also another one called "The Muvipix.com Guide to Adobe Photoshop Elements 2018" Got a 5-star rating but expensive at £30...

Grace98 - Amazon lists a small selection of guide books regarding PSE 2018 at a wide range of price levels. The Vandome book at ~$15 does not seem outrageously priced. Sounds like it might be a good place to start. Keep your eyes peeled tho for future books by better-known authors since I expect PSE 2018 will be a popular subject. Good luck. /Ralph

The only thing I can speak on is that it comes with a guided section that you can use to help learn the unguided section. I used it to help me to learn the unguided section. I thought it was done well.

Thanks. I will get the standard one. The latest PSE is 2018. Most probably will have various features which I won't use but at least I'll have the latest version and won't need any upgrades in the future. I've got a laptop which is about 3 years old so I think I should be OK.
I do use PSE8 but my knowledge is very limited.

Yes, it is just what it sounds like, the Upgrade only is usable if you already have a recent version on your computer. You obviously don't with PSE 8. I believe the current version 15 or 16 now. I've had PSE 9 on my wife's PC but PSE rarely gets used because I have Ps CS6 on my PC. I think they have changed PSE a lot since PSE 8. These days it is like a scaled back or simpler or essential version of Photoshop CC and a bit of Lightroom for a Catalog. Be is your computer is older age and O/S wise check to be sure it is usable with a current PSE version. If not you might have to upgrade or replace your computer, or find a slightly older version of PSE (used?) like version 12 or 13.

As to a books, this seems to be a common problem. But if you have PSE8, have you not been using it? Do libraries in the UK have computer software books to lend? You might try also looking on the Amazon (US) site for software books, new and used. I sometimes find Books and Music CDs on the Amazon (UK) site that are not available on my default site US site.

Thanks Dave. I think I might follow your advise and get PSE18 first and see how I get on with it. Re filing, I too like my own system and know where everything is.

I just purchased PSE18 about 3 weeks ago which is my first exposure to PS (no pun intended), and I find it to be very intuitive to use. I played around in the Guided section for a bit then moved to the Expert section for most of what I do there.

So you might want to play for a bit then decide if you think you need reading material on the subject.

Now keep in mind I'm not using Lightroom for any of my filing needs, I like my own system.

Thanks. I will get the standard version though as the upgrade might ask you for a registration number. A friend gave me the disc as she doesn't use PSE so it's not registered.

According to the Adobe website, the PSE 2018 upgrade is available if you have any previous version of Elements.... which sounds to me as if PSE 8 would qualify. So, why not save a little and just get the upgrade?

AFAIK, Adobe hasn't offered upgrade versions of PSE in the past. You always had to buy a full version. (The same was true of Lightroom, until version 6 was available as an upgrade $99 US instead of $140, although it was very well hidden and only available when bought directly from Adobe as a download.)

Grace, Open your version > Help > Support > and keep selecting what looks like it's taking you to some sort of Adobe Help. If you make the right selections you will eventually come to an Adobe "Chat" selection. At that point you can ask the people at Adobe. I understand these are vague directions but they don't take long to try ... so why not attempt it?

Need your expert assistance please. I’d like to purchase Photoshop Elements 2018 (disc). I’m getting it from Amazon UK but there are two versions:
Standard at £ 79.75
Upgrade at £ 60.39
Is the upgrade for people who already have PSE previous versions installed on their PC. I’ve got a very old version (PSE 08) so want to uninstall and start from scratch.
I’m not very good at post processing so would really like a good instruction book which is written in simple English and doesn’t assume you’re familiar with PSE. My knowledge of PSE is “Quick Edit only”. There was a previous post but did a search and cannot find it. Apparently somebody said not to get the Dummy book as it assumes you’re already very familiar with PSE…even the reviews on Amazon stated this. There was another book which had good reviews: Photoshop Elements 2018 Tips, Tricks & Shortcuts in easy steps by Nick Vandome (this had very good reviews).
Thanks a lot..Grace

For the small difference in price, I would get the Standard version. With the upgrade, the program will look for the previous version when it installs. If it doesn't find it, it will ask you to enter the serial number. That can be a nuisance after you have upgraded a few times.

You Tube can be a good source for help. I have a full collection of books by Scott Kelby and reread them from time to time. They are expensive, however.

Thanks. I've just this minute ordered the standard version. Better start from scratch as my current version dates back to 2009.

If in doubt, go with the stand alone version. But first, do a full backup of your Catalogue using your old version then Restore it using your new one. I did that when I moved Elements 14 to a new PC and it worked fine.

For the instructions...if you can afford it, I highly recommend the "How to Gurus" who do a DVD series called "Learn Adobe Photoshop Elements 2018" It goes step by step and shows you what each choice in the software does and really teaches you everything the program can do. I think it is around 30.00 but it is well worth it. Check it out at https://howtogurus.com/

I agree, I have it for PSE 15 and refer back to it often, George is an awesome teacher, he refers you to different plug-ins in his many tutorials, just check out some of his tutorials on youtube. I am sure you will be a follower. Good Luck.

Scott Kelby's "Photoshop Elements 2018 For the Digital Photographer" is a good book to use. He explains (very plainly) how to do some very good things in PSE. I have his book for Elements 9 (where I first started) and Elements 14. They are essentially the same books (though the 14 book is shorter). You may be able to find is book for Elements 2017 on Ebay (or somewhere else) for a savings.

Grace, I would suggest you go with the Standard version, since there have been considerable additions/improvements since version 8. I seriously doubt the update could work from version 8.

Hi Grace, I know you are asking specifically about PS Elements which I have used older versions quite a bit and liked. However, you might consider Affinity Photo which right now is less expensive and a more sophisticated program. It has about the same learning curve as PSE with lots of video tutorials and the company is from the UK. I've been using it for over a year now and really like it.

Grace, I'm sraeres usiubg PSE10 and am now sing PSE14 and it seems to do everything I need, but when I upgraded from PSE10, and except for the early Picassa and Windows live that were my intro to PP, but they are not 'intuitive'; they use strange, at least to me, names for tools. For example the "Eraser" tool doesn't erase! . When I started with PSE 10 I got a book by Barbara Brundage which is excellent, and I still use it as a guide for PSE14. I do not know if she has published an newer version. I got mine on amazon.com; you might look there for a version. As you have already been advised, don't waste money on the "Dummies" books; they assume that you have had years of experience with previous versions.

Good luck!
