Need your expert assistance please. I’d like to purchase Photoshop Elements 2018 (disc). I’m getting it from Amazon UK but there are two versions:
Standard at £ 79.75
Upgrade at £ 60.39
Is the upgrade for people who already have PSE previous versions installed on their PC. I’ve got a very old version (PSE 08) so want to uninstall and start from scratch.
I’m not very good at post processing so would really like a good instruction book which is written in simple English and doesn’t assume you’re familiar with PSE. My knowledge of PSE is “Quick Edit only”. There was a previous post but did a search and cannot find it. Apparently somebody said not to get the Dummy book as it assumes you’re already very familiar with PSE…even the reviews on Amazon stated this. There was another book which had good reviews: Photoshop Elements 2018 Tips, Tricks & Shortcuts in easy steps by Nick Vandome (this had very good reviews).
Thanks a lot..Grace

Dear Grace, yes you must have a previous version of PSE in order to use the upgrade. The upgrade notes should tell you what version(s) of PSE are acceptable for installing the upgrade. Your PSE 8 will probably not suffice. IMHO, you will have to install the stand-alone version. You can delete the old version at any time.

You may be okay in purchasing the "Upgrade" version. The Adobe website doesn't seem to list any particular versions, it just asks what software you have and Elements is one of the choices. In any event, the installer will leave both versions installed.

For the instructions...if you can afford it, I highly recommend the "How to Gurus" who do a DVD series called "Learn Adobe Photoshop Elements 2018" It goes step by step and shows you what each choice in the software does and really teaches you everything the program can do. I think it is around 30.00 but it is well worth it. Check it out at https://howtogurus.com/

Another good choice for learning PSE is "Anthony Morganti Photoshop Elements" on YouTube. Just do the search. His videos are outstanding, informative, and easy to follow.

Grace98 - Amazon lists a small selection of guide books regarding PSE 2018 at a wide range of price levels. The Vandome book at ~$15 does not seem outrageously priced. Sounds like it might be a good place to start. Keep your eyes peeled tho for future books by better-known authors since I expect PSE 2018 will be a popular subject. Good luck. /Ralph

The only thing I can speak on is that it comes with a guided section that you can use to help learn the unguided section. I used it to help me to learn the unguided section. I thought it was done well.

Yes, it is just what it sounds like, the Upgrade only is usable if you already have a recent version on your computer. You obviously don't with PSE 8. I believe the current version 15 or 16 now. I've had PSE 9 on my wife's PC but PSE rarely gets used because I have Ps CS6 on my PC. I think they have changed PSE a lot since PSE 8. These days it is like a scaled back or simpler or essential version of Photoshop CC and a bit of Lightroom for a Catalog. Be is your computer is older age and O/S wise check to be sure it is usable with a current PSE version. If not you might have to upgrade or replace your computer, or find a slightly older version of PSE (used?) like version 12 or 13.

As to a books, this seems to be a common problem. But if you have PSE8, have you not been using it? Do libraries in the UK have computer software books to lend? You might try also looking on the Amazon (US) site for software books, new and used. I sometimes find Books and Music CDs on the Amazon (UK) site that are not available on my default site US site.

I just purchased PSE18 about 3 weeks ago which is my first exposure to PS (no pun intended), and I find it to be very intuitive to use. I played around in the Guided section for a bit then moved to the Expert section for most of what I do there.

So you might want to play for a bit then decide if you think you need reading material on the subject.

Now keep in mind I'm not using Lightroom for any of my filing needs, I like my own system.

According to the Adobe website, the PSE 2018 upgrade is available if you have any previous version of Elements.... which sounds to me as if PSE 8 would qualify. So, why not save a little and just get the upgrade?

AFAIK, Adobe hasn't offered upgrade versions of PSE in the past. You always had to buy a full version. (The same was true of Lightroom, until version 6 was available as an upgrade $99 US instead of $140, although it was very well hidden and only available when bought directly from Adobe as a download.)

Grace, Open your version > Help > Support > and keep selecting what looks like it's taking you to some sort of Adobe Help. If you make the right selections you will eventually come to an Adobe "Chat" selection. At that point you can ask the people at Adobe. I understand these are vague directions but they don't take long to try ... so why not attempt it?

You Tube can be a good source for help. I have a full collection of books by Scott Kelby and reread them from time to time. They are expensive, however.

Thanks....I'm old fashioned and prefer a book to a DVD or YouTube. That's the only way I learn.

Thank you. I'm going to purchase the standard version. To be honest the PSE 8 disc was given to me by a friend who doesn't use it so it's not registered.
I have a feeling if you buy the upgrade, it might ask you for a registration number.
