We were on the road before dawn in order to be at Convict Lake for first light. Anticipating temps in the 40's, I wore my Columbia rain jacket, but not my fleece. I was an icicle by the time I got back in the car. Later I saw where the recorded temperature that morning was 28 degrees. (Just a word to the wise, wear fleece. You can always take it off.) After a warming breakfast at Tom's Place, we drove up the Rock Creek Road to the John Muir Wilderness Area. Second lesson learned--never ask a hiker how difficult a trail is! After a rocky, strenuous (for us) hike, we reached the overlook to Mack Lake. Next stop was the Mammoth Lakes area where we went first to Mamie Lake, then crossed the road to photograph the waterfall created by the outflow from Mamie down to/and including Twin Lakes. Heading east, we went to the Hot Creek Geologic Site, then north to scout out Mono Lake for a nice location to return to for a sunrise. June Lake was our home base for the next three nights.

Gorgeous photos, especially when downloaded!

Thanks for all those thumbs up, Sirius_one! So glad you took the time to download--these wide landscapes have so much fine detail that gets lost in the basic display.

Love the scenery...it's just beautiful.

Glad you enjoyed the views, Marty. It sure would be nice to have more time out there in order to pick and choose the time of day and lighting. Our itineraries keep us on the move. My BH doesn't understand why I like going back to places I have already been--it's all about the season, weather, and lighting.

Thanks so much for the great pictures - and memories! Years ago, I spent time camping in that area at least once every summer - Coldwater Campground at Lake Mary, Twin Lakes, June Lake and on up to Tuolumne Meadows Campground, where we were awakened by a bear next to our tent - I could hear it breathing! That, of course, was after heading west out of Lee Vining on the (partly) one-way road over Tioga Pass - when it was open. Good pictures available also at Devil's Postpile, and from the top of Mammoth Mountain ski area where I loved to ski every winter - not to forget the glory of Yosemite!!!. I was fortunate enough to be able to take the best trout out of Lake Crowley on Opening Day (weekend closest to the first of May) 17 years in a row! My pictures from that era were way before digital!!!

Again, MANY thanks,

Loren - now far removed from that kind of country, in Baguio City
Thanks so much for the great pictures - and memori... (show quote)

Wow, Loren, you really ARE far removed from the rugged mountain ranges of the West now. But I envy you the years of spending your summers in such magnificent surroundings! Sounds like you experienced the 'best of the best'.
