I prefer 32 Gb and several of them. My D800e has a CF slot as well I use a 32 Gb CF there and it is a back-up file for the SD slot. I keep them in pairs labelled "A", "B" etc. and change them in pairs.

Having had 2 cards fail and both were high quality and purchased from B&H, we use 32 GB cards and do a double backup every night. Between us we have three cameras and carry 9 32 GB SD cards and have come close to filling all of them on some trips. The 9 cards equal about 9-10,000 images.

I always carry 1 16GB card for each day of the trip plus additional cards 1 for each 2 days, I have only one had to change to one of the back-up cards once. I shoot with a Nikon D7100 usually in Both raw + jpeg and can get about 250 pictures per card

Ava'sPapa, this question has been discussed a number of times on UHH, it might be worth a look at some of those discussions for advice. If this is not sufficient, here are some sites I found in a couple of minutes, that will give you some data expressing various "professional" users opinions:

I envy you travelling to Italy with your wife. It is my favourite destination in Western Europe! Have fun and journey safely...

Cheers!!

Take several 16gb cards, and change frequently. Take a portable external hard drive from WD (Western Digital). Has a SD card slot, and put your cards in and download into the external nightly. Format your SD cards when necessary and reuse.

I'm sorry Duane but reformatting the SD cards on the road is a bad idea for the following reason: If you format your SD card after you've backed them up to a hard drive you are left with only one copy of your files - the copy that you have on your hard drive. Hard drives are less reliable than SD cards. So, you would be better off leaving the files on the SD card in addition to the backup copy on the hard drive. After you get home, back them up to a second hard drive then, if you want, you can format the SD cards. The lesson here is to have at least two copies of your files whenever possible.

Exception!
I actually use and have several 32gb class 10 cards. My camera, a D7200, has two card slots, the top card never gets removes unless.... So I always have two back ups; the external WD hard drive, and the card from the top slot in my camera.

I've shot digital since 2000 so I have cards of many different sizes. Newer cameras allow me to shoot two cards at once so I don't worry about a card failing. That said, I only once lost a card, and it was because I ejected it while the camera was still writing to it. It was corrupted beyond full recovery. Just no cure for careless. But he cards are amazingly robust. I put some of mine (SD and CF) through the laundry several times with no bad affect. I still have functioning 512 MB (Yes, MB) cards older than any of my cameras. On a trip to China I shot more than 100GB of RAW, about 8000 images with a 24 MPX camera. Based on these experiences I'd say buy the largest chips available at speeds around 95 MB/s to yield your anticipated volume. I think the SX50 takes SDXS cards so something like a Sandisk Extreme Pro 128 GB should work fine.

That's fine for you, Duane. Your camera has dual slots but the OP is using an SX50 with a single slot and your advice to him is not appropriate given his situation. When I'm responding to a post, I sometimes forget that I'm trying to provide a solution to someone with a problem or issue. I will, instead, tell the OP how I do things rather than giving advice that will potentially solve his/her problem. I think that maybe you've fallen into the same trap as I sometimes do. I hope that I haven't offended you. That certainly was not my intent.

Not knowing how many pics you'll take makes it hard to suggest how many cards to bring. I spent 12 days in Italy a couple of years ago and took 3 16 GB cards and didn't fill any of them to capacity. My camera is a 12 GB model and I took about 6000 pictures spread over the three cards. A 16GB card holds 4000+/- 12MP pictures. If you bring a computer you can download every night and possibly get along with only one card. If you want to be extra safe you can upload to the cloud too. I generally don't upload to the cloud but I do not erase cards and use the computer as a back up for the cards. I upload to the cloud when I get home.

If you have only one card now I'd sure buy at least one more. 16 GB cards only cost about $10 each so the money shouldn't much of a deterrent to buying additional cards. Also, if you run out of capacity you can buy more in Italy.

Have a great trip.

I bring one card for each day. Several 16GB cards will probably suffice for your needs. That way I know where I was on each card and in what order I made the photos.
Insurance against the card dieing and losing the entire vacation on one card. Enjoy yourself.

If you are shooting jpeg you could probably get away with 5 or 6 16gb cards. If it were me, I would take 11 cards, one for eac day’s shoot. I use 32 gb cards and shoot in Raw

I would instead take a handful of smaller cards. There would be less risk of loss of images, if you don't "put all your eggs in one basket".

Well, this is just my way, but I would take a half dozen 16gb cards. Just keeping the eggs in different baskets and having enough room for all my shots.

This is exactly what I do on all of my overseas trips.

Make sure to number the cards (or assign letters, as I do - A, B, C, D, etc.) with a marker pen and use the cards in sequence order; this way you will always know which cards are empty, which are full, and which card to use next.
