Thanks all of you. I purchased all my camera equipment years ago from B&H but you know how kids are they want it the cheapest regardless what they are told.

Might become a good life lesson for him.

I could not agree with you more, except that the cost of money he would be throwing away would be his own fault. But children do come back and ask parents for loans, this is what l am afraid will happen. Hope his wife will talk some sense into his head with a rolling pin. She is a Police Officer and is checking into this company with the local PD and BBB in the city. When she finds out anything she will show him l hope very soon.

Your kid should have better eye sight so he can read the fine prints.

If your son is really penny wise and pound foolish, then I don't imagine he will be swayed by you, his wife or by experienced photographers who have no skin in the game. It will be an expensive lesson and I am not sure bailing him out with a loan will help him in the long run. Besides, if he is that adamant (read stubborn), then it would not be a surprise to me if he purchases gear he doesn't need or will use.

Ten grand is a pretty expensive life lesson. He can get some Gucci and Rolex items down by the Battery in Manhattan for far less.

I have bought some used stuff from Abe's at a PHYSICAL vintage photo show with good results. But only where I had the opportunity to check out the equipment personally and negotiate the price (they often come down from the ask). On used equipment, I don't generally care if the equipment is grey market - but I wouldn't buy a used Nikon lens from them for that very reason. I don't know where the "of Maine" came from, but I think Abe was intended to invoke images of Honest Abe, who might have been a more recent memory when they first started in business!

I just heard from his wife. Thge BBB and the NJ AG advised her to stay away from this company. Would not say but something is in the works. He took her advice and placed his order with B&H Photo. They even gave him a discount also. He was really happy with the deal he got from them and he even included the 2 year drop warranty. Wife is expecting in a few months. This is why he wants the cheapest deal on Camera Gear. I told him, once a B&H customer you are a B&H customer buyer.

Run - don't walk. After you have placed your order they will call to upsell you all of the things you thought were included because everybody else includes them.

Thought they were in N.Y. I phoned them once, said I wanted to buy a lens. The guy on the phone said how are you going to pay for it. I said I'll send you a check, he said ok you send a check we'll send you a lens, click. ( he hung up).

Agree: "you might also consider the manufacturer's refurbished offerings."

I don't think I've EVER seen somebody recommend Abe's when a post asks where to buy, and I think I ALWAYS see "don't do it" answers when somebody asks about them. There's a reason B&H and Adorama are ALWAYS on the recommended list. I've personally had a good experience with Roberts, too.

Consider KEH also - the used lenses I've bought from them over the years have always looked better than their published rating, and the one that looked great but wouldn't focus properly was easily returned with just an exchange of emails. I see that KEH also sells new, now, but I don't know how competitive they are on price compared to other internet sellers.

Depending on your preferred brand, you might also consider the manufacturer's refurbished offerings. I say this as one who now uses Olympus Micro 4/3 equipment. Olympus America has an online shopping site with a continually changing list of refurbished cameras and lenses. I've signed up for the email notifications, and earlier this year scored an OMD EM1-MkII refurb for $1275 on a 24-hour flash sale (Original List $1999, available most places today for $1599 new.) Even adding $99 to extend the refurb 90 day warranty to 2 years (a year longer than on a new one) I was pretty far ahead. I've saved some money on refurbed lenses, too. But all of this may take some time if you're after a particular model of camera or lens - most of 'em show up eventually, but they may not be there when you first look. I assume other manufacturers have similar programs, as they all deal with equipment which can properly be sold as refurbed.
I don't think I've EVER seen somebody recommend Ab... (show quote)

Found a new camera store on internet located in N.J. called Abe' s of Maine. Need your opinion about this company. According to the website has been around since 1979 and is cheaper than B&H on Camera Equipment. My other son wants to spend over $10,000 on Camera Equipment and found a Sony a7rii for $500.00 cheaper at Abe's vs B&H. I know the old saying you pay for what you get. Abe's is also selling a 6 year drop replacement policy 100% $599.99 Sounds too good to be true. This is wht l am asking before he spends his hard earn cash and gets what he pays for!

Usually, unusually low prices is a sign of grey market or bait and switch.... best to deal with A-B-C, Adorama, B&H or Cameta (like them for refurbs).

Abes, 42nd Photo, and 6th Ave are usually trouble.

Roberts out of Indianapolis. Best service.
They have a used department called Usedphotopro.
Either one has a click for the other...
They have a points reward system.
AAAND everything they ship to you has insurance on it.
