The following is a pic I took, it wasnt taken with a macro lens, but in lightroom I have a few options as far as views such as fit, fill, 1-1, and 1-2. heres my question....If I crop my photo to the area defined as 1-1, does that make it a macro...probably not due to the fact it wasnt 1-1 when I took the pic, right? But then again it says its 1-1 hence my confusion.Or is it actually selecting the same area that would be 1-1 on the sensor?

this is what lightroom defined as 1-1
this is what lightroom defined as 1-1...

this is the original pic

As long as the result is 1:1 or better, what does it matter? Nice shot!

I don't us Lightroom, so I can't relate to that. But...
There's no way your editing program (LR) could know what represents 1:1 or 1:2, so I don't think you can assume that's what is being referenced. LR would have to know the height and width of your original subject to calculate a 1:1 reproduction ratio.
Hopefully someone familiar with LR will jump in here to explain what those designations mean.

In LR the 1:1 is actual pixels, 100% zoom.
2:1 = 200% zoom
Fit = fits the whole picture into th viewing tea.

I dont know, it does know what camera Im useing as well as several other cameras so I was thinking maybe it got the nessesary info when I updated LR for my camera...such as sensor size ,ratios, and what it takes for LR to match my cameras firmware,,,,I did notice a significant quality increase when I updated LR to match my camera. So maybe it could do the calculation backwards knowing how many pixels i have avail and with the settings could extrapolate the size of the subject in relation to my sensor....or maybe I'm over thinking it who knows

wouldnt 100 % zoom be smaller then 200% because if I click the 2:1 option it showes me more of the photo then if I choose 1:1 . 1:1 brings me in twice as close or so it seems.

I tend to agree with you. but if this is some sort of shortcut to macro Id like to know is all..I have this overwhelming desire to do macros and a underwhelming wallet.. and every time I seem to get close to haveing the money for the lens I want something comes up ...oh well such is life . Id like to have that 70 to 200 tamron macro 2.8 lens $763 or maybe ill go for the $435 90mm 2.8 tamron still fighting the inner turmoil do i jump at the cheaper or wait a bit longer and get what the reviews Ive read a "better" lens...decisions , decisions

The major sellers - Adorama, B&H, KEH - sell used equipment at substantial savings. Then there's always ebay. I've bought used and refurbished, and I've never been disappointed. Depending what you plan to do, you might not be able to justify spending twice the amount for a macro lens. Nikon calls them "Micro," by the way.

I posted a very tight close-up photograph on the macro topic of Ugly Hedgehog. I was promptly told via a response post that what I had was a close-up, only a photograph taken with a true macro lens, as opposed to a setting on a camera ( I use a Leica v-lux 30 which has a superb macro setting). I figure the quality of the final photo, not the means achieving is what counts!

How about extension tubes? You can find some very inexpensive ones for manual shooting. Even the best ones to work with autofocus on your camera are less than $200 for a set.

That's what I am planning to do for my initial adventures into macro. I have some other priorities first.

I don't know how to get to it but there is a focused macro thread on UHH and a good discussion on extension tubes there.

The Lightroom crop 1x1 is not the same as a magnification factor of 1:1. Apples and oranges.
However, your photo is excellent. I wouldn't worry whether it qualifies as a "macro" image or not. It certainly qualifies as a beautiful image.

I considered extension tubes but the glass i have really isnt the greatest im considering the 90mm tamoron ans this could double as a portrait lens,,again back to trying to make up my mind....ok headed out to buy another lotto ticket if i win it really wont be much of a issue then lol

1:1 is 100% zoom
1:2 is 50% zoom (look carefully, if ur able to view more of the image, you've probably selected 1:2 not 2:1)

In LR you have many zoom choices.
