I agree with all who recommend going to Youtube. When searching, be sure to be specific in what you want to do. Example: Change aperture Nikon D3400. Back button focus Nikon D3400. The more specific you get, the better the results!

Try checking out Mike Browne's videos on YouTube. He is a professional photographer and has videos for people new to using DSLR cameras as well as advanced user topics. There are loads of videos to choose from. He mostly uses a Nikon D300 in his videos but the information is still valid for other models too. Here is a link to his playlists on his YouTube channel:

Welcome to UHH Tinaweena, glad you joined us. Sorry, no short cuts. Start out by reading your camera manual. When you are finished read it again. Go to Nikon USA, they have tutorials for your camera. Also go to UTube, be brand and model specific. After all of this get out and practice.
Have fun, learn and enjoy the forum.

There's a book by Davis Busch, he's a member of our club. He writes a comprehensive review and "how to" for many cameras. The book will walk you through everything. There are pictures of each of the menu pages so can easily go through all the setting. Here's the amazon link:
https://www.amazon.com/David-Buschs-Nikon-Digital-Photography/dp/1681982307/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1530665878&sr=8-1&keywords=david+busch+nikon+d3400

My daughter has that camera and loves it

Welcome.
1 Master the fundamentals of your camera until it becomes a familiar tool. Able to change settings without "fiddling".
2 Familiarity with what lens and lens settings and camera settings result in what type of photograph.
3 Exposure to what others have done in your fields of interest. IE: macro (tiny things), landscape, etc. Learn how they used their camera to "create" outstanding and iconic, timeless, memorable, images.
4 Aspire to be able to take wonderfully composed and meaningful "snapshots" then. . . level up.
5 Use your camera often for no reason whatsoever to cultivate "seeing". (#1-4) Many beginners and hobbyists can walk through a "target rich environment and see nothing to photograph. Usually their cameras only come out on family outings and holidays, then gather dust the rest of the time.
6 Emulate those that take "stunning photographs" and create "art".
7 Never be afraid to ask a photographer, "how did you get that shot?"
8 Realize that photographers create art, the camera is just a tool.

Enjoy the journey.
Aloha

What I did is I used the manual and just started using it. Experiment on everything. It is not like you are using film and wasting money on bad shots. Just do it.

David Busch has written a book on this camera called (Nikon D3400 not surprisingly). His books are very practical and well written. Search Amazon, they have it.
