A Ringlet Butterfly (Aphantopus hyperantus). I found about a hundred of them the other evening, settled to roost for the night in a small area of grass and scrub as it got dark. They seem to go into a torpor like state and you can move among them. Weird.

How fascinating, David! I have never heard of them but I guess it is the location that makes that true. Nice shots!

Thank you very much for looking and for commenting, always appreciated. I think these are a European species. They are happy to fly on cloudy days so there is always a good chance of seeing them.
