Sometimes the car gods are in your favor.

I've been having fun (sarcasm) trying to solve the problem with my evap system on my pickup. I was down to the wire because my registration expired at the end of this month and it would not pass DEQ with the service engine light on. I cleared the code, there's no pattern to when it will come back on, and Friday morning headed to the test station. Even with waiting in line it cleared with no issues and I got it registered. Phew! Today on my way home from work the service engine light came on again. Yep, the same error. Well, at least now I have 2 years to solve it instead of 2 weeks.

Am I the only one who finds it slightly ironic... that the poster with a Forum name combining “chaos” and “train”, is invoking special consideration from the car gods?

Chaostrain, this may be a sign from (the deity of your choice, including if you wish the notional overlords of the combustion engine) above, that you need to forgo the loneliness but convenience of personal transport, and instead seek to utilize public transportation to accomplish your destination in life? 😱

Or, it might just be that you have a gunged up filler cap or breather tube. 😉

If your gas cap isn't hangin' off, evap problems are most often caused by the vent valve {usually located on the carbon canister near the back of the vehicle} intermittently sticking open, or a small split in one of the evap hoses. Smoke machines are sometimes necessary to find these PIA problems. Evap tests are run by the vehicles computer {depending on its strategy } in a random pattern, but usually will not perform this test when the fuel tank is over 80% full. Sometimes the fault code will help to identify the problem { Large or small leak detected }.

We own two Jags - I begin to worry when there isn’t at least one check engine light on.

They always say if you own a Jag you need 2. One to drive and one to fix.

When I was young and single I had a 1967 XKE with the high compression engine, titled as a 1968. 2 cars later I had a 1974 Volvo I bought new. The Jaguar was much more reliable than the Volvo, by a huge margin. The good news with the Volvo was the dealer was within easy walking distance of where I worked. The bad news was I had to drop the car off there frequently. 4 years later and I traded it on a Buick Electra.

My check engine light comes on with my OBD scanner indicating it is an oxygen sensor or the catalytic converter. I use the scanner to clear the light but it comes back on in a few weeks. Good thing where I live we don't have to have our cars smog tested in order to register them. Kind of makes up for not having a noise ordinance here letting the Harley riders make enough noise to wake the dead.

Wait for the new Electric Harley's come out, you won't hear them coming. Wonder if they'll still be called "HOGS" then?

I can't see an electric Harley happening. Harleys have a distinctive design and exhaust note and in 1994, the company filed a sound trademark application.

Harleys made in Asia, now that's a different story.
