I use Affinity, Luminar and SmartPhotoEditor. The latter is very cheap and great fun to use but won’t suit the ‘purists’!

Photoshop CC and Lightroom Classic is the best combination period! Learn them and you'll be doing yourself a favor. Adobe has other software like Premier, Indesign, and Illustrator for an additional monthly fee. I use InDesign, Illustrator, Lightroom and Photoshop on a regular basis and I am happy with the fees I pay based on the powerful programs that are available to me.

You may want to check out On1. It has many features of Photoshop, Lightroom and Luminar.

I agree with Mac and oldart both recommending "photos" the app that comes with mac computers free. I am totally happy with "photos" the successor to the "iPhoto" app on macs.

Use the Photos app that came with your computer for now. You can do a lot with it. Add Luminar as an extension, chances are that is all you will ever need but as your skills and interest grow and change you will know when it is time to move to a more comprehensive program like lightroom, photoshop or some other editing software if you need it.

Can I edit videos with these also?

pfunk436, Adobe Lightroom/Photoshop/cloud will give you just about ALL of the import, cataloging, commenting, editing, exporting to jpg, png, psd, or about any other format you can think of capabilities. It is a system designed for and by professional photographers and it works well. And for $9.99 per months (and that included 20gb of cloud storage (which doesn't have to be used but can be) and the ability to sort edit any and all of your photos, it is a steal. All of your photos are cataloged and stored on your computer hard drive for easy access. I have about 4 tb of images on an 8tb drive but had several other large drives on my computer.. I am running Windows 10 but it also runs fine on Apple (in fact it was originally designed for Apple back in the days when Apple was about the ONLY decent graphics machine. The Adobe Cloud also gives me the ability to have my Adobe apps (Lightroom CC, Lightroom Classic CC, Photoshop, Camera Raw, and Bridge) installed on all of my computers. However, with the basic $9.99 package, I can only have it active on 2 computers at a time. So what I do is (if traveling) log out of my 2 home desktops, which opens the ability to log-in on my two laptops. I save all images (when traveling) to a 4tb external USB 3.1 drive and then re-import them to my home system when I return. This gives me the ability to have and use the Cloud Apps on 6 or 7 computers (2 at a time) any time that I want. When finished on my Laptop or the computer at friends house, I just log out and then I can log in at home or from other computers.. However, there are ways (read the manuals and available books on Lightroom) to export your Lightroom images so that they can be re-imported or copied to your home system. I carry two USB drives, one with the "Adobe Library" your edited images and all of the settings and adjustments and the second is just a copy of all of the raw images from my SD cards as they came out of the camera. This gives me 2 ways to get my images into my home system.. By the way, I have used 3.2tb of the 8tb drive in my main computer... Having said that, my wife is using about 1tb of that as her D drive on her computer (the drive with her directory is shared to her computer across a 1gb Ethernet link).
The point to this is that YES you can do about anything professionally with the $9.99 Adobe Cloud.

For free, try GIMP. It's been around for 20 years and is widely supported for Mac and Windows.
https://www.gimp.org
Search GIMP Youtube tutorials for a peak at user interface.
(No, I don't use it.)
Affinity is practically free and has an Illustrator-like program as well which shows their commitment.
I have Affinity, have used it, but am an Adobe user across numerous applications and rely on uniform user environment.
Affinity is my recommendation.

I use LR 5.7, ON1 18.5, and Luminar. That said, I’m becoming more and more enamored by ON1 and am doing a great portion of my current editing there. I’m thinking that as I learn more about it, it will become my primary go-to. It costs about $85.00, and you’re not tied down to a monthly fee. On1 is a pretty powerful program.

Some/many may disagree, but Mac's Photos application does a pretty good job of editing. The price: free.

Oldart's right; if you want to simply adjust brightness, crop, adjust levels, sharpen, etc., "Photos" does a fine job at no cost. It also saves your adjusted photo separately from the original so you can export either and it is a reasonably good file storage program. If you want more advanced options like layering and stacking, you'll need to go for a program like Photoshop. My only objection to Photos, is that it used to have the option to use Photoshop (or similar) as it's default editor. Since I liked Photos file storage system, it was a nice blend but in the latest iteration of Mac OS, they eliminated the ability to connect the two.

Many of us believe we need the best or want to learn the best program i.e. Adobe but unless you like spending endless hours in front of the screen instead of being active and living in the present don't bother. The free Photos and iMovie will do all the casual photographer will need.
I have been using Luminar lately mainly because of all of its presets including AI adjustments that make it fun easy and does not require endless hours of learning.

I do not do videos but I have used Mac's, Photos, for some time now. It does everything I want to do with my photos. I have LR6 also but haven't gotten into using it yet. I think the answer to your question is to check out Photos and see if it does what you want to do with it. If not then look into something else that more suits your usage.

The suggestions of other users may or may not suit your personal preferences but they are a guide.

iMovie should be just fine for you, unless you want to do lots of special effects. Photoshop can work with movie files, too, and it can do more than one would think!

Adobe Photoshop CC 2018, Lightroom CLASSIC CC 2018, Serif Affinity Photo, Apple Photos, Lemkesoft Graphic Converter...

Look at the Mac App Store ratings.
