a few years ago I took pic of a purple mushroom. Even my sister-in-law who has a degree in botany couldn't tell me what it was (her PhD is related to the genetic make-up of various species in the mustard family, so maybe it was out of her range of knowledge). I'll look for it, but it might be on my other laptop. I think it's edible, but not tasty.

Search and Google Images and then on an image identification site or a mushroom site to compare.

I have also heard you can eat some types of them for an unusual experience. Please don't try this at home.

I was home when I tried them. Glad I was. Very eerie experience. Once was enough. Just not my "cup of tea". Which is how we injested it. I have done a lot of reading about the history of Psilocybe(pronounce all vowels) and it has quite a deep one. The fly agaric is another. Some think that these are where the gods originated .in our various cultures. A lot of useless haaa maan wassup seems to cloud facts. Enjoy the evening, glad this thread pleased.

Only purple mushroom I know that is safe and tasty is the Blewit. NEVER EAT A MUSHROOM YOU ARE NOT 100% SURE OF. Google symptoms of Amanita poisoning. There are others with the same poisons. Mary are reported to be tasty. Probably so you enjoy your last meal. Just a serious warning to the uninnitiated. And thanks again to all.

I believe: 1,2,3,5,6 are Amanita muscaria, various. Formosa, Theyellow fly mushroom. #7 may be Amanita virosa,or one of it's lookalikes, Destroying angels. All deadly.#9 is Fomitopsis pinicola, the Red belt.#10 is a spinney tooth, maybe Spongipellis pachydon. Pa.is a great state for mushrooms.Even has a "Mushroom" capital, Kenneth Square. Been there for the museum. Thanks for your post.

Yes, now all the shroom'ers learn that after eating. Amanita

To all on this subject: Unless you are an expert, don't go foraging for
random mushrooms. Some may not kill you, but they'll make you wish you were dead.

Often the victims are of foreign origin. They eat our mushrooms because they look like ones back home that they are used to eating. Survival sometimes requires a liver transplant. Only one verified death of a pro mycologist has ever been reported.Dirty Harry said a man's gotta know his limitations. Never truer if you collect wild mushrooms for the table.

Those are LBJ"s. Little brown jobs. ID of a mushroom starts with a spore print. You then do a process of elimination using other characteristics. Everyone's photos are beautiful. ID's will be easy for some, but almost impossible for the most part. BUT if you want another photo subject, collect spore prints. Might be in for a pleasant surprise.

That's Latin darlin', evidently rfmaude41 is an educated man. Did you notice the English one? Very similar.Means the impudent finger. Most likely the middle one. From Cassell's New Latin Dictionary.

I wouldn't be surprised if there were some interest - lots of nature photographers here. I'd like to see some myself, although I don't have much to contribute, as mine are always in a bowl on the counter...

What song does the French National Mycology Team sing after a victory at the Mycology Olympics?

How about a mushroom landscape?

Some have told me that this evokes a feeling of "The Lord of the Rings" The moss and shapes of the fungi, against the bare grain of the wood gives no clue as to the scale of this scene.
