Doesn't e-bay cost a fortune to sell on it? I read over what they charge and it seems like the first several sales they get almost all of the money or all of it from the sale.

BS. Been selling on ebay 20 years now. Even with Paypal fees, eBay has never gotten more than 14% of my listings. Plus as your volume grows they start mitigating your costs by giving you specials on NOT charging listing fees. I have paid very few listing fees for the last few years.

I taught eBay classes at our local Community College for the last ten years.

I'm not saying eBay is easy. You have to work at eBay, or you let some consignment shop or used camera reseller RIIIIIP YOU OFF! Big Time.

eBay supplements my retirement income by a factor of 2X. Doubles my retirement income, in a few hours a week. And I can do it from anywhere, both buy and sell.

On the first few sales, until you build some feedback, eBay does sometimes put a 21 day hold on your funds, but that's released to you when:
The shipping process is tracked and shows delivery.
You get feedback (positive) from the buyer.
21 days elapses.

I always ship using the EBay shipping discount with postage paid (3% postage discount) and automatic tracking. After a period of good activity, the hold feature drops off. eBay still only gets their 13-14% counting Paypal.

Remember this. Ebay and Paypal only make money if you make money. They are both aggressive about your success. Both are constantly improving your opportunities. Ebay shares have been a good investment for investors as well.

Most of the big stores (B&H, Adorama) will buy good used equipment. If your equipment is not "pro series", you won't get a lot because there is so much of it out there, but if you have pro series equipment in "very good" to "like new" condition, you will get a reasonable amount. If you are buying equipment from them, they will generally give you a little more if you are "trading up". I used to use KEH quite a bit, but since they were bought a couple of years ago, they have become slow at paying for equipment (30 days). They used to pay in two weeks, and their prices were better. I miss the old owners and managers.

I traded up on a camera with Adorama. I was very pleased with their price and their service.

The best experiences I have had buying and selling used camera equipment has been with KEH. I usually obtain a verbal quote prior to send my items for sale. I do describe in detail the equipment I wish to sell and the offers after evaluation are usually equal, in some cases more than the verbal quote. I do have one advantage since I live in Atlanta and I want to actually look at an item they offer for sale, I can arrange to have the piece of equipment brought up from the warehouse and actually arrange to view. On one occasion the sales person actually had the camera body I had selected, he called back later and the body may have been missrated or graded. He also found another body same version that he thought have been rated properly. I had shipped a body and some lenses to Adorama and my intention was to apply the money they would pay equipment I had sent. I must say their evaluation process took longer than I had expected, and the offers were less than quotes I had received from KEH.
