I have my used, quality digital equipment for sale and would like to avoid the complications with Craigslist, eBay, and ruthless dealerships. Anyone have any suggestions for me? I'd really like to find a company who would trade my equipment for new equipment. I've read the Robert's Photography has a good reputation.
Google your city for re-sellers...
What are small sellers going to do on Ebay about collecting sales tax?

They will successfully stay under the radar at least for a while.

You can try mpb.com. I have been dealing with them lately. They give pretty good prices on used cameras and lenses.
I have traded in some cameras and lenses on some of their cameras and lenses.
They are pretty quick about giving you estimates, shipping and paying.
I've been satisfied with them.

Agree, love this site. Have sold a camera and lenses. They gave me a good price and even more than the estimate one time.

Allens Camera has always given me fair value for my used gear towards new gear. They only take gear in great shape. Ask for Brandon or Rob. Tell them Gerald Williams sent you.
BTW Adorama camera comes down from NYC and buys Allens' used gear to resell in their store and online (I have personally witnessed this) , so you know Allens has great used gear. They are also my favorite pro camera store for new or used gear I buy. I use them even more often than B&H ,Adorama or Amazon. They are the largest camera store in the Philadelphia, Pa . area. Cheers

This is also my goto shop for both buying and selling. Can't go wrong here.
I sold to KEH and B&H recently. I would suggest getting estimates from more than one retailer. I did and the result was pointing some equipment at one dealer and the rest at the other.
Try KEH or Adorama. I've had good success, especially with KEH.

I've had no problems buying or selling on Ebay. Retail stores give you next to nothing for used equipment. Remember they can only reasonably re-sell it for the going used rate so you pay their profit. You can try even selling on the UHH. I've bought a two camera and three lenses from UHH members. Or you can save it and give it to a friend.
Doesn't e-bay cost a fortune to sell on it? I read over what they charge and it seems like the first several sales they get almost all of the money or all of it from the sale.

I think that depends on if your state sees you as a person or as a business. As a business you are supposed to have a business license and report your sales tax collected at least quarterly. As a person they don't care yet unless you sell a car or a boat or a motorcycle.
Nothing but good words for KEH. Honest and fair is an apt description. They gave me a probable price, if the equipment was as described, that was 300 USD better than the highest quote from anyone else. I sent them the gear. They found a scratch on a lens and sent a revised quote that was 100 USD less than the original - still 200 USD more than any other quote. I accepted and received a check 6 days later.
Thank you all for the info! I need to trade in some equipment as I want the new Nikon 80-400mm lens$$$$
If I trade in, I am assuming I can get it cheaper than straight up retail??
No quality merchandiser buys used equipment without a price gouge for their profit.
I buy/sell equipment on ebay twenty years now. Mostly film. There's no profit in digital at all, unless you can turn it around in less than a week and buy it right in the first place. Right is half or less than market value.
Anticipate getting 1/3 of market value for your stuff on a straight out cash purchase from a quality reseller like KEH, mpb, and others. Roberts included. In fact, I can't buy from any of those and resell or flip for a profit, but I am sure they don't have half of their asking price invested in acquiring the equipment.
The reality is that your stuff has little value unless you get real about writing your equipment down, just as a business would do. All those $3500 Nikon D850's that people are still waiting for will be worth about half in 18 months to two years from original roll out date. (Not when you finally get them).
Harsh reality, but GAS is GAS, same as that you waste in your car, driving around the country. I worked in a Mercedes dealership and we used to "rape" people on the trade ins. The financial reality was that the Used Car side brought in more profit than the New Car side (Mercedes even). And the Parts, Repair and Service side brought in profit slightly under the Used Cars, yet more than New Mercedes for profit.
When you're throwing your money around the way the capitalists want you to do, life is just one big SCREW JOB!!! I never buy new. First I buy clean used, then I buy factory Refurbished, Then other party Refurbished, Never Never NEW. in 20 years of eBay, I have purchased two NEW camera's in digital. Those were both "Just Bend Over, and Stick It To ME!!!"

Sounds like you have a really negative outlook on life, especially in the business of photography.

Check to see what they're selling similar equipment for. Check to see what similar equipment is going for on eBay. The big stores are not going to give you what you could get on eBay. They have to make a profit. You have to decide on convenience versus the bottom line.
