From your description you stated your were rushed. That being said and fair enough, most of us have probably been there. The scene has a bit of softness and when zoomed in the numbers on the front of the locomotive appear to be doubled. I would also have made it just a bit less bright. Otherwise a well composed shot.

Thanks for commenting, Wayne. Yes, I was down to the last few seconds before the train appeared. If there is a next time I'll hopefully be better prepared. Too bright is not a criticism that my shots usually get. Usually I'm having to deal with overcast and misty. So I'm glad of the chance to record the weather in a better light. In reality it was quite a bright, sunny day.

There are a few things that make this shot stand out and have been mentioned. I like the perspective of the train at track level. I also like the way the train is coming around that hill so that you don't see the entire train at once. I think this adds in giving a sense of motion without having to pan or blur anything. The smoke billowing up into the clouds also adds to the atmosphere of the shot. I looked for the over-sharpening, and only noticed it at very high magnification which is not how this photo was intended to be viewed. So I don't see it as a problem. This should appeal to anyone who has an affinity for trains or landscape photography. Well done.

Thank you Erich. Softness and over-sharpening have been mentioned but they don't jump out at me when I view it full screen, so they aren't a problem for me. I had the camera in continuous shutter release mode and the shot immediately after this one (the last in the sequence) didn't have anything like as good a smoke plume, so I chose this one despite the fact that I would have preferred the train to be just a little further forward. And I'm glad nobody's mentioned seeing signs of cloning. I had to clone out a tourist who was quite large and almost centre stage, overlapping a train carriage and the fence.

I went back to the download to see if I could find the cloning. Nothing jumped out at me; but you mentioned that the tourist overlapped a carriage and the fence. If it is the area near the second carriage, then I do see very slight signs of tampering. (I had to know where to look and really search hard, and I'm still not sure I have the exact spot). I'd say you have nothing to worry about in that regard.

Download is beautiful... Could you elaborate on why it is called the Jacobite steam train and any connection between it and Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobite revolution ? There seems to be a lot of interest in Scotland lately prob. in part because of TV series etc... Do yourself a favor as others have said; download.

Thank you Bob. You just summarised the historic connection. The West Highland Line runs past Glenfinnan, which is where the clans first gathered under Bonnie Prince Charlie (https://www.nts.org.uk/visit/places/glenfinnan-monument). It also crosses the Glenfinnan Viaduct (https://www.visitscotland.com/info/towns-villages/glenfinnan-p236571).

Thanks R.G... I figured the connection was there as soon as I read Jacobite. My wife enticed me into watching an episode of " The Highlander " and I have been really entranced with Scotland ever since. You have a beautiful country and someday I would really like to do a self guided driving tour/photo shoot much in the same landscape vein as Phil Norton does with the west coasts of northern England. Fascinating history and with my daughter marrying a McMenamin it becomes even more so... Thanks for replying. Bob
