Great linear perspective and the old coal-burner seems on a trip out of time.
How’s about some historical perspective?

I just happened to be looking up Steam Journeys before I read this. Home page might help.

Looks a touch over sharpened to me, R.G., a problem I've had recently when trying to get the Flying Scotsman down here in the South (look in the new trains forum). But you've done well to get a good track level shot that shows the terrain well.
The 'over sharpening' is not an issue viewed at screen size and I only notice it when I hit the + button.

I used this shot for an experiment in the placement of the smokestack, at both the 1/3's and the golden ratio. Its interesting how that relatively small alteration, changes the impetus from where the train is coming from, to where the train is going.

Hi Coz in the Territories. Thanks for commenting. To what John N has posted I can add https://www.westcoastrailways.co.uk/jacobite/locomotives-and-coaches.cfm.

The original purpose of the West Highland Line was to connect Mallaig and Oban to the main rail network. I managed to get a reasonably interesting background, but there's better to be had in that area. The line runs close to Ben Nevis and along the shore of at least one loch that I know of - there's probably more. I'd like to spend a day or two in that area to check out the possibilities.

Thanks for commenting, JN. Over-sharpening isn't something I normally do. If it's coming over as that, it's probably because the original was a bit on the soft side. I had a bit of a rush to get myself in position and if I'd had time to think I would have upped the shutter speed. But I'm glad I had the presence of mind to refrain from zooming in on the train at the expense of the surroundings.

An interesting experiment, fergmark. The locomotive is well past the centre line and I was happy to have it that way because I wanted to give equal emphasis to the train as a whole. In that sense there's more space in front of the train than behind it, and there's still plenty of room for the viewer to project the train's movement into.

From your description you stated your were rushed. That being said and fair enough, most of us have probably been there. The scene has a bit of softness and when zoomed in the numbers on the front of the locomotive appear to be doubled. I would also have made it just a bit less bright. Otherwise a well composed shot.
