Hello all. I have shot with an old 55mm Nikon micro lens that finally bit the dust. I have a Nikon D90 and am looking at the AF-S micro Nikkor 85mm, 3.5, ED VR lens. It sells for $479.00 at
B & H photo. I know there are Sigma or Tamron lenses but really want to stay with Nikon.

Anyone used this lens?

All Nikon macro lenses enjoy a good reputation. The biggest difference between lenses is the Working Distance (between lens front element & subject).

At Minimum Working Distance, which is normal capture for 1:1 magnification (life-size), the WD
for a 60-mm macro lens is 90-mm = 3.5-inches;
for an 85-mm macro lens is 127-mm = 5-inches;
for a 105-mm macro lens is 157-mm = 6.2-inches.

Make sure you prepared for WD of your selected lens.

You can do no wrong following Nikonian's recommendations...he's the macro guru on this forum.
I use the 55mm and also have the matched 2X teleconverter, making it 110mm; but I've always wished I had the 105mm instead, and still do.
I never knew there was anything other than Nikkor lenses.

I just bought the Tamron 180mm macro lens for my Nikon and it does a great job and allows you to stand back from the subject. There is a $50 rebate going on now for the lens.

Great information. The 85mm is in a better price range for me but after reading the reviews on the 105mm, I think I will save up for this one.(105mm, f/2.8, VR - $909 at B & H.

I'm at work right now Abby, and I'm not a real techno kind of guy, it might take me a while to conjure up some of my photos, but if you search on my bogeyeliot name you can find some of my macros in the macro forum here at the hog along with comments on them from others....I think you'll get a good idea of the lens, considering the expertise level (NOT) of the shooter

probably so. Aperture is broken. I will take it to a local store and see what they say. May cost as much to fix it but we'll see.

Have both a 60mm Nikon macro and a 105 mm purchased in that order. If I had it to do over, I should have purchased the 105 mm lens first. The 60 mm can be reversed so all is not lost but the 105mm is my favorite lens.
