Lest anyone feel having to wait the weekend for next day shipping is an inconvenience, try living in Alaska where "next day" could mean up to a week at times. So when an online business states "next day delivery," I don't really expect it to arrive the next day. And I just deal with it.

Sometimes I need it next day and even the same day but I know what it takes to get that. Our company often call a manufacturer in Germany early in the morning and have them buy a ticket on the airline to get the item in the evening for a $40 part with the cost of shipping about $1000.

I think he was referring generically rather than specifically.

I'm not sure about that. What he said was, "when a certain online competitor that is frequently bashed on UHH offers free next day delivery for any particular item, Saturday delivery IS a part of their service." That sounds pretty specific to me. I hope he's not referring to 42nd Street Photo.

Just a word of warning regarding a deceptive business practice on the part of B & H. Today (Friday before Noon), I ordered an item.. a large font orange banner on the page declared "Free Next Day Shipping To (my location). When I checked out I learned that the free delivery was to be Monday, rather than tomorrow, Saturday. Several discussions with various unhelpful individuals at B&H resulted in no change to the delivery date. A condescending explanation was offered that next day delivery is actually next business day delivery (a big difference on a Friday order).

Thank you for your order and this feedback. We regret your dissatisfaction. It's now 1:00pm and right now the banner on our home page says this:
Most orders* over $49 qualify for Free Next Day Shipping (1 business day) to New York.
Orders placed after 4pm on weekdays will not ship until the next business day. Orders placed after 12pm Fridays will not ship until the following Monday.
Faster shipping methods may be available; just upgrade during checkout.
*Some exclusions apply

We regret and apologize if this was not sufficiently clear.

So, I hope listserve members recall this deceptive practice the next time someone sings the praises of B&H, and especially because when a certain online competitor that is frequently bashed on UHH offers free next day delivery for any particular item, Saturday delivery IS a part of their service.

Exactly. Sounds like the OP has never purchased anything online before and/or is used to blaming other people for his own laziness.

Amazon has two-day free shipping when you're a member of "Prime," but the item might not actually leave the warehouse (or the affiliate company's) for several days.

The first time I purchased from B&H I saw, "free two-day shipping to most areas." I took the time to view their map to confirm that Washington State is three days, not two. No disappointment, no blame. And they've been a great company to do business with for five years.

Did it say next day delivery or next day shipping? Those sound like two completely different things. When I purchase items of various types from Amazon Prime it specifically refers to next day delivery or 2-day delivery. So what does next day shipping actually mean? To me it means an item will be shipped by the next day, not delivered by the next day. I'm not sure where you're located, but if you were ordering from somewhere on the opposite side of the country could you reasonably expect next day delivery.

By the way not to be nitpicky, but your use of the term listserve, besides being an archaic term is inaccurate if you are referring to UHH. You've obviously been around for a while and the use of old terminology is sometimes hard to break.

I don't know the OP, and I won't make any assumptions about his buying habits. Without additional information about him, where he lives and why he expected next day delivery, rather than shipping, your first paragraph may be a bit harsh. I've seen many annoyed posters here come out of the starting gate angry and aggressive and end up posting a mea culpa at the finish line

When someone starts out by accusing a well respected company of "deceptive business practice" they should expect harsh.

I was just suggesting that insulting him and implying he's lazy probably is not the best approach.

For reasonable and thoughtful actions, I would agree 100%. The irresponsible behavior of posting this topic - with its provocative title - forfeits any expectation of respect (IMO).

"NEXT DAY" has ALWAYS meant NEXT BUSINESS DAY! That's not so hard to figure out for the average consumer.

Can you find a business like BnH that offers next day delivery on a Saturday or Sunday? For a Jewish business to offer next day delivery on Saturday, would be like a Christian business offering next day delivery on Sunday. This is a case of misunderstanding, not deception.

With Amazon and USPS it can be any day that has a 'Y' in it.

The better approach is to plan ahead, and leave government and religion out of it. If I do not plan ahead, then it is my fault.

B&H, Adorama, and others offer excellent service and value. Perhaps we shouldn't feel entitled. We should also respect other peoples' values.

We should own our own problems.
