This young man is a theater student who needed some shots to put together an audition pamphlet and some headshots for applications. Used my Canon 50mm for the first time on all of these shots except the last two headshots. Was disappointed in the clarity of the photos, apparently I didn't have the settings quite right. Thankfully they were able to use these for the pamphlet they were putting together. We did re-do the headshots as he needed a very clear shot and could only submit one image. This time I used my Canon 70-200mm and got the clarity that I wanted! I also created a DIY photo studio in my basement for the formal headshots!

I am finding that photographing people is vastly more challenging than shooting flowers and nature scenes as I had been doing! People wiggle, have bad posture, BLINK, and have no idea how to position their bodies for photos without intervention!!

#1 and 3 are very good. Side lighting gives a face definition. I also approve of the variance in facial expressions and change of clothes.

Might I suggest some shots with your subject not looking directly into the camera.

These shots are fantastic.

Thanks so much! For his immediate purpose he mainly needed to show his face, but I did get some of him looking away from the camera ... Just didnt post any of those. :)

I don't shoot people because of the same reasons you find them hard to shoot. I think you are doing fine and with practice you will get the hang of it. Cheers
