That would depend. It could be a very poor reason, but a damn good excuse. Imodium does not cure all forms of GAS.

I can see one advantage that the camera would display the frame lines but it's easy enough to estimate the frame lines and also by shooting full frame and crop later would allow for shifting the crop a bit left or right if needed. You would end up with the ability to shift 6mm left or right or if you hold the camera vertically 6mm up or down. That is a good thing.

That's why I wrote it as a "real" advantage. After a while you get a good sense of what your limits are, and it's not that hard to "imagine" where the cropped areas would be. No doubt, before the brain figures it out, having the guides is a good thing.

Years ago, I had both a Yashicamat and and a Rollieflex 6X6 TL camera. I made quite a few very nice square images. At the end of the day, if you like and see square, compose it in the camera and crop in PP.

In those old days of analogue photography people used to compose their image in the viewfinder. From that respect it is very useful to have gridlines in the finder.

The D850 can shoot square as indicated above when you choose 1:1 (24x24). I don't know of any other Nikon but the 850 that has that . The 810 and 500 do not.

There is no "evil" i the square format at all.

And the square format works very nicely

Not DSLR, but the P900 has a 1:1 shooting format.

You can get square anytime you want, all you need to do is crop after shooting. On my old film Nikon F, F2, F3, I could take the prism off and put pin strip tape on my focusing screen so that I could see exactly what would be in the final print. Really miss that.

Yes, you can crop in post - but - it would be nice to have the viewfinder delineation to compose with !

I am all FOR square formatting - after all, it was good enough for Rolleiflex and Hasselblad ! 8-)

Briefly put: no
There is fx, dx, a 1.2 ratio and 5:4
These options are for the D5 and will vary from camera to camera

Just an aside to your post. You may recall from the "Film Era", ( how I hate that term) that Ernst Wildi was a spokesman for Hasselblad. He would praise the advantages of the square format. The option to crop either horizontally or vertically, the fact that twelve exposures would fit on a 8x10 sheet of paper. The camera could always be kept in the same position, etc. His motto was,
"It's All There in the Square". I believe somebody has provided an answer to your question concerning square format in digital cameras. There is a photo blog run by Mike Johnston who was a former editor of the late "Photo Techniques" magazine. On his blog
called "The Online Photographer", he likes to hypothesize and speculate about camera designs. He has said that a square format twin lens reflex digital camera would be ideal. I occasionally use my vintage Rollei SL66 camera. Keeps me on my photographic toes so to speak.

This is model dependent - the D5 can do the “standard” FX / DX and also a 1.2 & 5:4 but not 1:1

Correct as well as other proportions.

Duct Tape on your sensor...

No, but Fuji does! And it is a shame that the sensors are not square, since we are wasting all that light - not using the top and bottom of light that comes through the lens. All because we are mimicking the 35 mm film format!
