Does any Nikon DSLR have 1X1 aspect ratio selectable in the shooting, or any menue other than retouch? Please spare me any lectures on the evils of square. Thanks.

I don't know but is that any better than simply crop it later?

The DSLR sensors are 3x2. You can crop to your heart's desire in post using all the data captured from the sensor. You might also use a text search for 'aspect ratio' against the electronic version of your Nikon user manual or even check the topic in the index of the printed version.

That's what some cameras do if you're using jpegs. The RAW is still the full image, and you'll still see all of it in the viewfinder. Not sure what you see if you're using live view, but the full image is still in the RAW file.

I haven’t seen it first hand but I watched a video that says the D850 has an option to shoot in square format.

Yes.

Menu
Photo shooting
Image Area
Select 24x24

This will create two additional guiding lines that indicate the setting.

You've been waiting a long time. You asked the same question 4 years ago. I hope you have better results this time around.

The D850 can shoot square as indicated above when you choose 1:1 (24x24). I don't know of any other Nikon but the 850 that has that . The 810 and 500 do not.

There is no "evil" i the square format at all.

If any of you have an Instagram account, a 1x1 crop is necessary unless you want the app to butcher your images.

To answer your question, you'd be better off doing it in post, so you can select the portions of you image you want to keep.

But, it was just pointed out that the D850 has the option. Somebody at Nikon must have read the thread 4 years ago.

I am not sure there is any real advantage to doing it in the camera, when it is so easy to do it in post processing. Even free applications like Irfanview and Faststone Image Viewer offer this capability, along with some other very minor enhancement tools. It would be a shame to have to spend $3300 just to get a D850 with that feature.

That would depend. It could be a very poor reason, but a damn good excuse. Imodium does not cure all forms of GAS.

I can see one advantage that the camera would display the frame lines but it's easy enough to estimate the frame lines and also by shooting full frame and crop later would allow for shifting the crop a bit left or right if needed. You would end up with the ability to shift 6mm left or right or if you hold the camera vertically 6mm up or down. That is a good thing.
