Tony you are absolutely right. They are the professionals and they have the equipment available to look at, feel, touch and shoot, not just someone's opinion on the web (no offence Hogs). I have such a camera store also. But I also have a Canon Experience Center where I can go in and play with everything they sell and see what is right for me. It's better than Disneyland!! ... and I go there often :) it's very dangerous actually... but you can put lenses on your camera model or try out new camera models... you can't do that on Amazon. And the service if you have a problem is so much better and easier. And I have found the prices the same and like I said they will match! They even give me freebies... such as Hoya UV Filters when I purchase a new Lens... that's even better than online!!
Tony you are absolutely right. They are the profe... (show quote)

Sounds great, but the nearest Canon experience center is 2,000 miles away !!

I went to the local camera store, with a printout of a B&H ad for a camera body a couple of days ago (a FF, with extras), and they would match it - including the "extras". I admit, I am a regular (for paper and ink carts and other little stuff) and they see me two or three times a month, but if I didn't *ask* if they could match it they probably wouldn't offer. I would probably accept the deal, even if the difference was as much as $50, because I know I could walk in there and they would assist me if I needed it (y'know, the "turn the camera over, see that little button, press and hold it and move this dial ... " type of help you can't get over the phone). And I also know that even if I don't purchase that FF from them, they'll help me out, because THEY WANT THE BUSINESS! And, they *need* the business. And, *we* need them!

I am all for local retail of all sorts, but it is just a fact of life they are getting squeezed out by online sales. If the difference was 400 vs 450, I would go local. But it is more like 400 vs 700. Can't do that.
