i live by the old rule....

you do something bad...they will tell everybody

i really do believe that most non-photography people really believe its the camera that takes the good photos.
and you cannot fix stupid.
I too live by those rules, but I kind of see their point. Most pros use really cool looking cameras so what are they to assume. Its almost like saying a race car driver drives fast because of his car...
I just tell them they were all taken with my IPhone. That really amazes them.

i agree.
years ago when i didn't take crap from no one........i found out what being alone is like.
guess being in photography biz or any other kind of biz.....requires a leather tuff tongue...because we keep having to bite it.
i hear that camera comment almost everytime i go out for a shoot. put on the 70-200mm 2.8 with lens hood...and even my clients that have hired me comment on how good the photos will probably come out because of that expensive looking equipment.
sometimes i'd like to tell them just to get the heck out of my site....but you what makes it all ok.......the green cash. i charge them more one way or another if they made the good pictures because of a good camera, after all, i have to pay for that expensive camera.
it's a 2 way sword for sure.
i do agree that sometimes feelings get hurt.....but repair those feelings with more cash.
Those who do not use a camera have no idea how much work goes into photogaphy. All they wand to know is how did it turn out.

Afew nonths ago, someone related a story about a photographer in exactly your situation. Sometime later (so the story goes) the photographer was invited to the young lady's house for dinner. During the meal, he asked her if she had a new stove--everything tasted just right. You could have heard a pin drop.
Its the photographer, not the camera that makes the difference.

I would have told her that the camera can not doing anything with out you operating it.
and people like this never understand how much time goes into learning how to take good photos.
one thingI learned when I was doing this professionally was to develope a hard skin

Well the other day a co-worker who has seen some of my work and would like me to shoot her asked me if it was my camera that made all of my pictures (the one I do show people) turn out so good. I sat there dumbfounded for about 15 seconds thinking of something smart to say when I just looked at her and said she was completely right.

It isn't only the "NON" photo people that think that way!! On a couple of my first posts in various threads, someone with a "fancy" DSLR complimented me on some scenic views and wanted to know what camera and lens I used. When I told them that the pics were from a Fuji Pocket Size P&S they just shut up and never asked again!! LOL!!

ask her when she gets a great meal at a friends house or restaurant if she says it must be a fantastic stove!
As someone already stated, you can have $1000 worth of nice copper pots and pans and silverware and china but that doesn't make a good cook. On the flip side as one pro photographer said ''you can give me Michaelangelo's chisel but I'll never create a David''. Good equipment helps but it's the person composing the photograph that understands composition, light, color, shadows, forefront and background etc... Of course we all here know that but we also hear this all of the time. So in a polite way I try to explain it this way.
I seem to take better pictures with a good camera than I can with a bad camera.
With the camera's of today, I can almost understand where the comment came from. We all know that we can pick up a Nikon or Canon, set it on auto and get some nice pictures. To get the nicer more "bestest" ones, takes hard work, a lot of time and determination. For ever 500 shots I take, I am happy if I get 10 that to me are good. In this lady's case I would just choke it up to a case of mind over matter....you don't mind she don't matter..
When someone said to me "You never take a bad photograph", I laughed and said, "I never show anyone the bad ones". Knowing how worn out my delete button is!!!
