From someone that does not know I say thank you I do and smile.
When someone say's to me "I bet that camera takes good pictures" I say Na! I take good pictures the camera records them.

I agree. There is no point trying to explain the art of photography to someone who clearly doesn't understand. I'd probably have an equally idiotic response to a field I don't understand.
Thank you I will definitely keep this in mind next time this type of comment come up. Another question just occurred to me; what if they can't cook? Its still an expensive stove! :)

That is the point!
Owning an expensive camera does not guarantee good photos, just like owning an expensive stove does not guarantee good meals.

I just push the button when the picture is perfect.
Oh, if it were only that easy for me!
I tell them it's all about the equipment. Anybody can do it.
"you must have an excellent camera"
My response is yes, I do, but it is the laziest darned thing I've ever seen, cos unless I pull it out of the bag and point it at something I can't get a single picture out of it!
My stock answer is no, but I hope to one day.

I've been reading everything this forum has to offer plus anything else that has to do with photography. I try and shoot everyday in order to become better at taking pictures. Notice I did not say "becoming a photographer". I know I have a long way to go and I am willing to work at it. Well the other day a co-worker who has seen some of my work and would like me to shoot her asked me if it was my camera that made all of my pictures (the one I do show people) turn out so good. I sat there dumbfounded for about 15 seconds thinking of something smart to say when I just looked at her and said she was completely right.
I've been reading everything this forum has to off... (

Tell her you'll answer her question over a home-cooked meal, but only if she promises to use her very best pots and pans. If she asks about framing, make sure she knows to use her best china and silverware. If the meal is no good, tell her she needs to upgrade her cook ware!
I would have told her that my camera composes pictures just like anybody could use an MRI to see what is wrong with somebody!!! But I was never one to step a way from a fight - don't start them but don't suffer fools..

Laypeople don't seem to know what is involved in specialized fields to create a product or use certain tools and creatively produce something beautiful. What's worse is the unthinking comments some can make and not understand how hurtful they can be.
I just happened to think of a comeback: "Did Leonardo use a special paint brush? Did Robert Frost or Hemingway use a special pen?"
Didn't you know? they all used murals/portraits out of spray cans...greatest invention... 8-)

No, I had a bionic EYE installed.
A man did that, and he can take video with his camera eye.
