I saw a baby Bantha in my yard. Or...or the wife's Shin Zhu 'Toby' really, really needed a trip to the groomer for his summer haircut

The wife says if she knew how to spin yarn Toby would make a lovely tan/gold sweater, if she knew how to knit!

Question settled, Toby needed a haircut. Ahhhhhhh! A pet baby bantha would have been neat.

Here is the after - he did what he usually does after his haircut - hide, in this case behind a small dresser under a table in the corner by the sliding door to the back yard. He wouldn't come out from under the table in the corner unless I had a dog treat in my hand instead of a camera so I put a 24-105 on my 5DIV, pointed a flashlight back there and clicked two frames.
The cute little kerchief is something our groomer does, along with blue berry shampoo on the dog's head. They used to just use pink and blue but the last couple of years they have pink, red, blue, green, yellow etc - Toby got red today.

If anyone wonders how good a 5DIV is at high ISO, well this is ISO 5000. I cropped the first shot but the second is Out Of Camera, no other PP done.
5DIV, 24-105L f/4 first model @ 24 mm, 1/100 @ f/4, ISO 5000 light was a pocket led flashlight.

Those of you following the threads about light - here is the difference between warm afternoon sunlight and the blueish white of an led flashlight.

#1 Before - Baby Bantha in the back yard
#2 After haircut - cropped only
#3 OOC
As you can see "Summer Toby" starts out looking like a chubby Yellow Lab puppy. "Winter Toby" looks like a walking golden tan dust mop or a baby Bantha.

Thanks, I think?
Hey! If millions of Army, Navy and Marine recruits managed to recover from haircuts like that then Toby can also.

Besides you should have seen him in summer 2016 - the wife and daughter took him and each put in ideas for the groomer. He had a walrus mustache, tassels on each ear and a pom pom left on the tip of his tail. Debra and Jasmine did admit they started to make him look like a little lion but got carried away and removed most of his mane.

I am a nice person, mostly. He and my little Jack Russell Tara get almost endless treats out of me. Head pats and scratches etc.
The family room has a doggie door, heat, AC and I play a lot of music. And the only work they have to do is automatic door bell (bark alarm) and yard police - mainly keep the squirrels away from the bird food.

Well, yeah, but usually by this time of year his hair is only 1/2 to 2/3 that long. This year I think he got hold of a case of that miracle hair grower they sell for bald guys and drank it. In nearly 8 years I have never seen his hair this long. The wife gets him a hair cut every May or June with a trim/touch up around Sep. By the time our "winter" arrives his hair will be about 2"-3" and stay that way for several months being only about 1" longer or less by the next May or June. This year it just kept growing.

Poor guy he does not look too happy. One question, do you worry that his summer do will expose him to sunburn, we do not get our Great Pyrenees shaved as the breed has sensitive skin.

Well, the recruit buzz job is my wife's idea. She thinks he will be too hot in our climate. My choice would be to leave him with 1/2" to an inch of hair. But the people at the groomer have done him every year for about 7 years now and they just follow what is on his card in their files. I think it is easier for them to buzz him than leave the length I would prefer.
In Toby's case there is also a major problem when his hair gets too long. He can't pee or poop without getting it all over himself and matted in the hair.
He doesn't really need to go outside and risk sunburn. He and Tara (my Jack Russell mix) live in the family room which has a doggie door to the back yard. The room has heat, AC and I made a bed big enough for both of them from an old sleeping bag. Their food and water are inside the family room and they spend most of their time in there. (I do also, my camera gear and computer are here along with a TV/DVR for "my" shows.) They only go out to go potty, investigate things, "help" me with gardening/caring for bird feeders, chase the squirrels and run to the gate to the front yard to act as "bark alarm" door bells.

We had a dog who looked very much like your "before" picture. Her fur also became matted and impossible to brush, so we decided to have the groomer give her a severe hair cut. But the amzing part of our story is as follows: This was an older and acted like an older dog, but after the hair cut she became absolutely puppy-like -- running, jumping, playing like never before. Did you experience anything similar?

It is hard to tell.
This winter his fur grew so fast that my wife and daughter trimmed around his eyes about every other week. The hair got where you could not see his eyes and he couldn't see very well. Drop a bacon treat on the floor in front of him and he sniffed and ran his muzzle along the floor until he found it. Out in the sunlight he could see, sorta.
