You see the thing is a debate is one thing but when silly squabbles continue from thread to thread people are rightly getting put off. Even the OP states they should have known better than to ask and this is wrong. The question was what should I charge. Not do you think I should be doing the shoot.

Everybody is entitled to free speach but I am getting sick of this child like level and you are actually spoiling things for others. Please will everybody have respect for others and think before you post. I did say Please!

Fotostan you bring a lot of this on your self most of the time. All this could have been avoided if only you did not bomb in the way you do. Robert-photos why bite, you have been here before just try and rise above it?

None of these comments are helping anybody and pretty soon both of your opinions are soon going to get completely ignored by everybody on every post you make.

I do apologize to all. PHOTOSTAN just rubbed me the wrong way but that is no excuse. I have unwatched both topics where PHOSTAN is participating and will ignor all his future posts.

Again, I sincerely apologize to all.

Hi crochetgran: Interesting question, As others have mentioned here, I would qualify what the dealer expects. How often will you need to shoot? How many shots per car or truck, Usually there is one of the front, sides, rear, interoir, plus possibly a motor shot and an inside the trunkshot. You can charge by the shot, by the car, or by the hour. How much is your time worth to you? You can always ask him what he feels is fair and should you disagree, share with him exactly what is involved and why you think he is to low. Another thought is a flat monthly fee, he gives you a weekly list of cars he wants you to photograph, you shoot and either give him a disk or you post them yourself at his website, I'd charge extra for that. I know I didn't answer your question but thought you might like a few ideas to think over. I'm sure other will have in put to add to mine... Hope this helps some.

More power to you crochetgran, congrats on getting yourself a nice little gig. I wish I could find the same thing. You have every right to accept a job like this and hope you do well at it.

I suspect that he'll get the photos, say "great" and then ask for an edit, or something else such as coming out to reshoot something.

I've done a lot of stuff on the cheap, and customers never appreciate it. In the end, you have to decide how much your time is worth. And if they decide that it's too much, so what. They can get someone else to do it cheaper, and you can spend your time doing what you like to do, rather than doing a job for someone who doesn't appreciate it.
Consider what your time is worth to you. Consider... (show quote)

Les,
Thank you for the advice. I am a retired lady and I just do photography for something to do and to supplement my income a little but I still don't want to do it for nothing or too cheap. I will do what you have said and if he thinks it is to much he can find someone else. Thank you I do appreciate your advice.

kmohr3,
Thank you. I was at the car lot with a friend and we were talking about me taking photos and he overheard us and ask me if I could do it. It just kind of happened. I wish you good luck finding your gig.

I bet you do but what has this got to do with me? I can't even see any pics of cars on this thread.

I also love taking pictures of old cars, and old tractors although I do not get the chance very often. There is some stunnung HDR potential in them and I am not too keen on HDR. They have such character. You just know that each car has a story to tell. I would love to own a Nissan Figaro or a classic Mini Cooper or VW bug.

If you look on youtube and type in car photography shoot there are some interesting videos.

Can I just add a note to Crochetgran. Shooting cars at a car lot is not as easy task as it sounds. There are a lot of background distractions going on, and a lot of colour cast reflections from other cars and you may struggle with space to isolate any single car. A circular polorizer is almost essential kit to cut down on reflections on bodywork and glass. Also pick your shoot times well to avoid mid day sun.

On the flip side the the tight spaces call for some pretty nifty camera angles and this is your time to shine with some stunning abstract and tight views to set off the cars to their full potential.

Remember to consider different viewpoints. Get down real low and then try getting up high for a top down angle. Different cars look better at different angles and some do not suit other angles. Depending on how many cars this could well be a long project and should not be rushed. Try as many angles on each car that you can.

I am sure you will be fantastic at it.
