Had a similar experience a few years back with a zoom/teleconverter connection. And I wasn't even 70 yet. It was like the strange images you get when you have cataract surgery. šŸ˜œšŸ˜œ

At 84 I can guarantee that there are a lot more "Duhs" available.

Thanks everyone for your compassion, humor and interesting anecdotes. I'll share one more about how my brain works (or does not work). For the past 21 years, a group of former colleagues and I have met for a weekly breakfast. We rotate through 10 - 15 diners, eat and chat for 2 hours and leave. About 6 years ago, I left to rendezvous with them at 8:45 AM. I'm a huge music fan and have thousands of mp3 files on a flash drive, mostly jazz. I was on my way along I 287 and had the jazz blasting. I was so engrossed I missed my exit. I had to drive another 10 minutes to the nearest exit and make my way back. I became a bit confused, made a few more dumb errors and after a half hour of driving found myself driving past my home. I was 30 minutes late to breakfast. I've known my colleagues for 47 years. They know me very well. Everyone had a good laugh, including me.

I laugh at myself everyday. It keeps me going.

Thanks for being a fun and cool group.
Mark

I started driving a bit over 60 years ago. It didn't take long to find that autopilot was invented 'way back then. I would be driving along and suddenly realize "how did I get here?" I would not have any recall of the last 5 or 10 minutes of driving. And that was 50 years ago or more.

I am 81, teach composition in Photography and play pickleball to keep mind and body functioning.
Any mistakes I make are learning opportunities and not failures. Don't sweat the small stuff!

quote=markngolf]Went to a family birthday party yesterday. Took the 5d MIII and flash. Began shooting and the flash seemed erratic. Missed many"good shots". Checked settings, ... everything seemed OK. After about 2 hours and experiencing the flash still being erratic, I discovered it was not seated completely in the hot shoe. DUH!! DUH!!! DUH!!! OH well, one more learning experience. I'm 81! Is there a time, other than after departing this Earth, I might exhaust my DUH's?

DUHs are ageless and are never completely deleted from our lives!

Been there, done that! I have an old (from the 70's) articulating grip and have a cord that goes from the hot shoe of the camera to the grip. It took a long time to realize that the shoe on the flash needed to be forced further into the grip end of the cord.

Last Friday I was setting my camera up to shoot a Boy Scout Eagle Ceremony. As usual I take a few shots just to check my settings. The flash was placed on top of the camera and my practice shots were all coming out dark. I reset the flash and still had dark practice shots. Reset a second time. Took several more practice shots. The first one was dark and the next two were perfect. Don't know what changed but it worked perfectly the rest of the night. When I got home found that the lock on the flash was not locked. Thankfully, my lucky "DUH" worked for me. I then tightened down the shoe on top of the camera. Seems to be working properly now.

Mark, I'm almost a couple of decades younger than you, but we all do these things. My mother-in-law (my favorite party animal) is now over 90 and has three older siblings. She is fiercely independent and managed several parts of a fund raising church luncheon, including some of the heavy lifting. You are only as old as you think you are.

As Groucho Marx said "You're only as old as the woman you feel."
