Carlsbad Caverns is in Southern New Mexico, nowhere near the Black Hills.

Hi, While you are there checkout Custer State Park, take the "Wildlife Loop Road" for your Buffalo shots(may be as close as bumping your vehicle). And see MT Rushmore FIRST if you plan on seeing Crazy Horse Memorial. All of Rushmore will fit on the head of Crazy Horse. I did it in reverse the 1st time I took my new bride and she always remembers Rushmore as only "ok" in comparison. Heads up...Custer State Park had a massive fire in Dec 2017 which burned a lot of the park. More info is available online. It's in recovery now but with new spring growth recovery will be quick. But having lived in the area, you are in for a treat!
Hi, While you are there checkout Custer State Park... (show quote)

I live in Rapid City, so a few comments. Custer State Park is great, as is Spearfish Canyon. Not sure where your information comes from vis a vis Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse. It might be true at conclusion, but your grandchildren may have a chance to see that. For now, and the foreseeable future, my vote would be for Rushmore. Devil’s Tower is also worth a trip, only two hours from Rapid City. And while in the hills, be sure to stop at Sylvan Lake, really a beautiful setting, and it is from this location that you’l find the Needles Highway. Let me know if you have an interest in birds, I can provide more specific information to you.

Will soon be going and soliciting advice on must take shots and lens that may be needed for great landscape photos. Traveling with Canon G7X MII And EOS T1i with kit lens. Feel like I may need a more capable lens but not interested in “L” quality for my use. Have been satisfied with equipment I have but interested in knowing if there is a “huge” uptick in better glass. Open to suggestions and budget under 1k. Thanks in advance.

We went to Mt. Rushmore in late June 2012 and I used a 6MP Canon S3 IS "bridge camera" and got some great photos. Our trip went from the SF Bay Area to Cedar City UT, Vail CO, Colorado Springs, Mt. Rushmore, Deadwood drive through to an overnight in Spearfish, then Yellowstone and Teton National Parks in 11 days and just over 4,000 miles. It was an amazing trip and you will enjoy it no matter what camera(s) you use. Be sure to go to the evening presentation at Mt. Rushmore and drive the Needles Highway and Iron Mountain Road. Talk to a ranger about which direction to drive the Needles Highway and Iron Mountain Road, as you go through several tunnels that have great vistas of Mt. Rushmore; the direction you drive determines whether they will be in your windshield or your rear view mirror. We thought Crazy Horse was a waste of time and a rip-off. When we went, the road into Yellowstone from Spearfish was only open about every other day due to snow, so be advised. We took the route through Ten Sleep Canyon (US 16) and it was a beautiful drive.

DJ, interesting experience you had there. I found the exact opposite and was impressed with Mt. Rushmore as being a tourist trap without much benefit other than seeing the mountain. I was told that the operating agency had recently changed and wasn't as public friendly as previous operators. Crazy Horse, on the other hand, was much more interesting with it's museum and native displays and such. We did do the drive underneath Mt. Rushmore with it's tunnels and switchbacks in such a beautiful setting. It's an entirely different perspective of America from the East coast with our flatlands and population.
