It appears to me that you are receiving random bits of information on many aspects of photography, when in reality you would be far better served by a course of study in an organized way. You are also reading phrases and terms that you are unfamiliar with and if it were me, my head would be spinning by now

Time to stop posting UHH help request topics, and instead read a beginner's book, such as Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson, or take an online class. This site is no substitute for the strong foundation you need in order to move forward. I promise you will be less disappointed!

Great advise and all true thanks Linda.

You chose a fine camera, which will serve you for many years. However, pulling it out of the box and snapping pictures will not produce the great pictures you expected. Many here have suggested 2 main themes: First, READ THE MANUEL, and second, get away from auto mode. As with any camera, there is a learning curve, and going from a P&S, to a DSLR is a whole different can of worms.

Thanks I am really getting the right sort of advice I just need to curb my impatience and do a proper study and your right DSLR is a whole new can of worms.

Shutter speed is 1/320. Equivalent focal length is 450mm. Minimum shutter speed to stop motion is 1/(actual focal length x crop factor) or 1/(300x1.5) or 1/450 (1/500 is slightly faster... use that.) ISO is not listed in the metadata.

I see ISO 400 in the metadata, and I agree that there is motion blur for the reason you state. I agree with the other potential issues as well.

You might consider this online/downloadable course: https://www.creativelive.com/class/nikon-d3100-dslr-fast-start. It covers the Nikon D3100/3200/3300. It's $49.00.

I've done the one for my Nikon D7500 and it was well worthwhile. It covered 80-90% of the functions/setting/buttons, etc. needed to fully understand the camera. The one for your camera should be similar. The instructor John Greengo also has many others classes than go into very detailed aspects of photography. He is a great instructor. Highly recommend him.

Thanks. Apple Preview in Mac OS 10.13.4 apparently does not reveal the ISO for these Nikons. I ditched my Nikon software when I quit using Nikons in 2012... It had quit working on Mac OS X 10.6.8 anyway.

It's not a bad shot. I have a Nikon D7100, and shoot a lot of birds. You'll get better results using a single focus point for birds. Change to the P mode. It lets you change certain things, but is still mostly automatic. I'm still learning about all the various settings myself. But using P mode and single focus point will make an immediate difference while you learn about all the other stuff.... In fully automatic, the focus points jump all over the place, especially in low light, which drives me crazy with birds.
