Could you explain what you mean by "bursts"? I assume you manually slightly adjust focus for each shot; it would be nice if you could instruct the camera to advance focus automatically with a single shutter press and multiple exposures with some wonderous ap.

I have the camera set to "silent burst" - I hold the shutter button down and it keeps shooting - on a Canon the "silent" means it goes a bit slower with the mirror moving slower to not make as much noise or vibration.
I did this the quick and sloppy way. Set AF on "one shot" - focus on the center of the subject with the shutter button half way down, lean back until the subject is out of focus but any foreground is in focus then push the shutter button all the way and slowly lean forward until the in focus area is the background. Not as good as individual shots off a tripod but it works when out hand holding and something comes along that I want to focus stack.
There are apps to do that: Helicon, Zerene and others make them for use with a tethered camera but you have to carry a laptop or high end tablet and wires + tripod. Some of the newer cameras bodies will do an internal stack I think the Nikon 850 is one.
I do have a product by Helicon, the "Helicon FB Tube" (only made for Canon and Nikon) which goes between the lens and body like an extension tube and has an internal processor, with an app on a smart phone, tablet etc you can program it and then with the shutter down on burst it will refocus for each shot. It only controls the lens so you have to count the frames or just do a burst and delete any extras. I just got a wired remote shutter release that can be set for # of shots so I need to set everything up and learn to use them together. The FB Tube does prevent focus at infinity which is why I didn't have it on the camera as I was in the yard and hoping for some closeups of birds also.

Nice shots, I use photoshop and do a lot of stacking. I just came across a new program, new to me, called Helicon. I started using it and love it. If your not aware of the software check it out. heliconsoft.com

I have Helicon and Franzis Projects Pro Focus (a German company)-I am still learning to use them. In the mean time I stack with PS. I also have the Helicon FB Tube which is an extension tube with processor that will control the lens and refocus for each shot in a pre-determined stack-10, 20 etc. It can be set for 1-999 I think. It can also be set to focus away from the camera or towards the camera from your starting focal point. It only controls the lens and you shoot on "burst" so you have to count the frames or delete any extra you might get. I just got a wired remote shutter that can be set for # of shots. I need to set it all up and learn to use them together. I don't keep the FB tube on the camera because you can't focus to infinity with it.
Another leading stack program is Zerene Stacker.

I forgot to put in the info. I was using a Tamron 180 macro but I had a Kenko Pro 300 1.4x on it so it is 252 mm.

Today I went back out to the same Iris, with a 180 macro and did some focus stack bursts. This is the first one I have processed - 5 shots - still a few out of focus areas because the wind was still blowing it around today.

Great capture of a gorgeous iris, Robert.

Thanks very much.
Will post more of this bloom later today, including one from this morning where it is reaching the end of life.
