Today I went back out to the same Iris, with a 180 macro and did some focus stack bursts. This is the first one I have processed - 5 shots - still a few out of focus areas because the wind was still blowing it around today.

impressive under any weather circumstance. Did you use Lightroom to Photoshop for processing/stacking?

I have a question for you, Robert. Up until recently I hadn't heard of focus stacking. Now it seems to come up quite
often. Is this method fairly new to you? I like the effect a lot, by the way.

First off - I like this image a lot, second I feel this is a close-up rather than a macro because of the size. If I am wrong please tell me.
Our Iris are just starting to bloom-photos coming soon.

I first tried it last summer. and now that flowers and bugs/bees/butterflies are back I am trying it again. I have done some by taking bursts I did to try and get a sharp image of swaying plants in the wind one and two years before I heard of focus stacking. Some of them came out really well.
With film it is pretty much impossible to do, at least for most people. Well you could shoot film, scan the film and then process it.
Stacking is used for several things: focus-increase DOF; anti noise over lap multiple low light shots and the random noise will cancel out(astrophotographers do this a lot for the night sky); add or remove things from a scene (an article I read was about wanting a shot of New York from an observation deck without people - did multiple shots with the tourists in different places - erased the people from each shot and stacked them - result was an image overlooking the city with no people on the observation deck.) You can do the reverse to put people/things into a scene.

Thanks, yes it is a closeup, I would need 4x5 to record this flower at 1:1. I used my 180 macro because of how sharp it can get details. I have also done it with my 100-400L mk2

Thank you for your explanation - I am a novice at macro and photo stacking - I like the results you got - I have not tried it on close-ups but your image urges me to try it - soon.
Maybe on my Iris if the Deer don't eat it before I get out there tomorrow A.M. LOL

Could you explain what you mean by "bursts"? I assume you manually slightly adjust focus for each shot; it would be nice if you could instruct the camera to advance focus automatically with a single shutter press and multiple exposures with some wonderous ap.

Nice shots, I use photoshop and do a lot of stacking. I just came across a new program, new to me, called Helicon. I started using it and love it. If your not aware of the software check it out. heliconsoft.com
