One of the most amazing things is that you can see for ever! What looks like 2 miles, a local will tell you it is 20 miles away. Definitely take your wide angle lenses. And if you are driving your own car, take the longest lenses too. My Dad wanted to see long horn sheep so bad, but they were too far away. Don't ever think that a wild animal is ok with you being close to them or their babies. I also saw people get stupidity close to wild animals. Stay a good safe distance away and use that long lens for close photos.

And we DID see two Big Horn Sheep banging it out in June of 1989! Close is not a viable option, tele lenses are made for that.

Fabulous trip and get started at 6 AM for Lake Louise, and return for breakfast after the Tourist are done. The Unique color of teh Lake changes as daylight emerges into full sun. Your early shots which may require a tripod will be unique.

Drink the local beer, Beauty--Ehhh?!?!?

Why did you buy a 300mms lens. Certainly not to leave it at home. If that is the case, sell it.

We'll do the same tour plus Glacier & Yellowstone in August. I have the same equipment as you, minus the 300 and I'll bring in everything. Are you driving? If yes, then bring in everything and leave it in the car as needed. I'll also take a 7-14 f2.8 PRO for landscape and urban images.

My wife and I are going to Banff National Park and also to Jasper National Park in September for about 9 days. I have an Olympus OMD-EM1 mk II and a 300mm Pro Lens (600mm FF equivalent), and a 75-150 Pro ( 150-300 FF equivalent), and a 12-40 pro (24-80 FF equiv.). I also have a 1.4 teleconverter. I will be shooting landscapes and wildlife- mostly from the car or from easy spots to walk to. We plan to travel on the Icefields Parkway up to Jasper. I am trying to figure out whether to take my 300 mm tele lens which is bulky, not knowing whether the wildlife at that time of year tends to be shootable from the car and near enough to the road to generally not need more than 420 mm, which is what the 75-150 with tele would give me. Any thoughts from those that have been there before? Any other tips? Thanks so much for any help! HenryB.

Have a great time yourself! I have GAS about the 7-14 Pro, but this year has been pretty expensive with gear so far, so I may have to wait for the next trip for that lens. I hope you get some great shots. Are you bringing a tripod? I think I will being a Me Foto Globe Trotter. Still trying to figure out some aspects of my Em-1 mk ii, particularly the live bulb/ live time shutter aspects. Best, HenryB.

I traveled and spent several weeks in that area a couple of years ago, at a similar time of year. The majority of my shooting was landscape, so you will need a good wide angle lens. Occasionally you will encounter wildlife, but that is usually off on one of the smaller roads, sometimes gravel, or on a hike. The reach of a 300mm with a 1.4 extender should be all you need. However, on one of the side roads, we encountered a black bear that was about 50 feet into the bushes, eating berries, so a zoom lens was useful. You should encounter elk, and you will not need a terribly long lens as they are not too wary of people. If I were planning another trip to the Icefield Parkway and the parks and lakes nearby, I would take a range of lenses allowing from 14mm to 300, and perhaps a 1.4 extender for the 300mm, also consider often needing mm in between those two. You should not need a terribly long lens other than for birds on a lake, like loons at a distance. The majority of shooting (mine) was between 14mm and 120mm.

I got a nice wolf shot from the car with my D7000 crop sensor and 18-200. Had to crop it some in post but it still came out well. Lots of wolves in cages at Wolf Haven. Could have used my 10-20 wide angle on the scenics but didn't have it at the time.

Thanks, GVarner- I would love to see a wolf. Saw a few in Yellowstone, but they were far away in the fog at down.
