My wife and I are going to Banff National Park and also to Jasper National Park in September for about 9 days. I have an Olympus OMD-EM1 mk II and a 300mm Pro Lens (600mm FF equivalent), and a 75-150 Pro ( 150-300 FF equivalent), and a 12-40 pro (24-80 FF equiv.). I also have a 1.4 teleconverter. I will be shooting landscapes and wildlife- mostly from the car or from easy spots to walk to. We plan to travel on the Icefields Parkway up to Jasper. I am trying to figure out whether to take my 300 mm tele lens which is bulky, not knowing whether the wildlife at that time of year tends to be shootable from the car and near enough to the road to generally not need more than 420 mm, which is what the 75-150 with tele would give me. Any thoughts from those that have been there before? Any other tips? Thanks so much for any help! HenryB.

For that trip, my preference was wide-angle...it's about the scenery! I was never much beyond 100mm.

You WILL see animals. Spring is when you'll see all the babies. I have the M-5 II, so I have some familiarity with your gear. I'd bring the 75-150, the teleconverter plus a wide angle. Leave the 300 at home; you're right, it's too bulky. When we were there we saw elk, mountain goats, deer, big horn sheep. The scenery is fabulous! Try to be on the beach at Chateau Louise at sunrise. Also, we took a helicopter tour of the Athabaska (-5 for spelling!) Glacier. Got some spectacular photos from the air. You're in for a treat!

FYI, you have a 40-150 f2.8, not a 75-150 (Olympus doesn't make one of those). I would think that if you're specifically looking for wildlife , the 300 and 1.4 would be imperative to bring along, however, shooting landscapes,
and general wildlife, the 12-40, 40-150 and ec-14 will be just about perfect.

Have been there twice and it's a wonderful trip -- would love to go again sometime now that I've got a better camera than I had on those trips. However, Alaska waits for me this summer! Don't miss both Athabasca and Sunwapta Falls. Great viewing!

As I have said before, on a once in a lifetime trip I have never been disappointed that I took along my longest reach lens.

Have a great trip!!!

Every time we’ve been to Lake Louise, it’s been overwhelmed with people. Try to get there early. Also, go to Moraine Lake (you’ll see signs on your way to Lake Louise) as it’s a beautiful place!

As you will be in the car or short walks there will be no need for the 300. (never say never) All the animals are used to humans and you will find them in close proximity to your camera. Please don't be stupid and try to get close to the deer as this is the time for the rut. And as we're on the subject take some photos of the stupid idiots that try. There are so many photo ops it is useless to try and list them, they are simply all over the place. I would recommend going up the Sulpher Mountain gondola in Banff for some absolutely grand vistas. Oh yes, don't forget to breath.

One of the best things you can do, is to stop at the tourist information office as soon as you get to Banff. Ditto for Jasper.
Banff: 224 Banff Ave; https://www.banfflakelouise.com/
Jasper: 500 Connaught Drive; https://www.jasper.travel/
At these information centres, they can give you the latest on road conditions, closures, detours, etc. Also on special events. They will even make hotel/motel reservations for you, although when we were travelling last year, we were told at the Mount Robson Information Centre that there was no space available in Valemount... Took the change and found plenty of overnight space. The IC's will only call the hotels/motels that are signed up for this service (for a price). Many hotels/motels are not.

Beyond: Enjoy your trip, take lots of photos, and return home refreshed and sitisfied!

One of the most amazing things is that you can see for ever! What looks like 2 miles, a local will tell you it is 20 miles away. Definitely take your wide angle lenses. And if you are driving your own car, take the longest lenses too. My Dad wanted to see long horn sheep so bad, but they were too far away. Don't ever think that a wild animal is ok with you being close to them or their babies. I also saw people get stupidity close to wild animals. Stay a good safe distance away and use that long lens for close photos.
