Thanks Brenda. Snap! It was the white silk cups situated right at the tops of the plants that drew me towards them. They both had food items attached around the outside of the cup. It is still quite cool up here and I assume that they had not spun webs because there is really nothing much flying here yet. I only saw a few post hibernation caterpillars and almost no insects. I hope I can find them again later. They look like beautiful spiders.

It is very warm here at the moment and lots of flying things are around making macro fun. Yes, they are pretty spiders, I will look for more.

Interesting. The term “Orb” derives from the circular pattern of their web construction. Bug Guide has annotations for Oregon and Illinois here in the United States so in my case, might be a victim mis-identification.

Hello LoneRangeFinder. At first I thought they were Labyrinth spiders because of the little funnel, but there was no structure below it. In any case all the guides said that Labyrinth spiders had never been reported in Scotland. I posted them on Twitter and tagged the British Arachnological Society (BAS) who confirmed the ID as correct. I am thinking they had not spun webs yet because there nothing around to catch as yet. I hope I can find them again later in the season. David

It was warmer on Friday and Saturday. Saw my first butterflies on Friday, but it's turned colder again.

Furrow Orbweavers (Larinioides cornutus). I found two of these within a few feet of each other at Flanders Moss National Nature Reserve near Stirling.
