Furrow Orbweavers (Larinioides cornutus). I found two of these within a few feet of each other at Flanders Moss National Nature Reserve near Stirling.

How odd, I found two of these on adjacent plants a few days ago and I hadn't seen them before either, I only got fuzzy pics as the leaves were moving so fast. You did better. Mine were just sitting on leaves.

Interesting. The term “Orb” derives from the circular pattern of their web construction. Bug Guide has annotations for Oregon and Illinois here in the United States so in my case, might be a victim mis-identification.

Thanks Brenda. Snap! It was the white silk cups situated right at the tops of the plants that drew me towards them. They both had food items attached around the outside of the cup. It is still quite cool up here and I assume that they had not spun webs because there is really nothing much flying here yet. I only saw a few post hibernation caterpillars and almost no insects. I hope I can find them again later. They look like beautiful spiders.
