Just tossing this out for a general photography conversation to get in the spirit of the season...I’m curious what lens/lenses are “favs” to Ugly Hedgehogs for flower close ups. We still have snow on the ground, but I’m trying real hard to think positive that Spring is right around the corner! Do you fav macro lenses or maybe a LensBaby, and if so, which of their lenses and why...etc.

Depends on the camera body, but from my recent research, the target seems to be near a 100mm equivalent focal length macro lens. I shoot an 80D and have been considering starting with my 50mm 1.4 and an extension tube.

Right now I do mostly sports and wildlife, so this is new to me as well.

Any lens in the arsenal can be used to shoot flower close-ups. Longer lenses require more distance for minimum focusing, but that can be accommodated easily. Photography usually requires some degree of creativity, use yours to figure out what lens you own that will let you make the photo you want. I once used an 800mm lens to shoot a close-up of dutchman's britches. That lens requires 6 meters to focus. Interesting photograph. Increase your daily consumption of creativity pills and get shakin'! Spring weather may be late in parts of the country, but it will arrive, ..........sometime? Good luck and have some fun!

I found close up(macro) is best with at least 100mm lens a 180mm may be better. With a longer lens you are back away and do not disturb any bugs and don't cast a shadow but, the negative is you have even less depth of field.

I have a Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS. Its an exceptionally fine lens. Unfortunately, I have learned that a great lens alone does not necessarily make great flower close ups. Lighting is very important and you may find you need to use focus stacking to get the best results. I'm still trying to figure out how to get the darn flower from moving around in the breeze.

I don't really have a favorite for that, I guess it depends on the mood I'm in, maybe I feel like taking a shot with a wide angle (interesting perspective, sometimes I feel more like taking it with a long tele, sometimes macro, so, I like to play it by air!

While I do favor my Sig 105mm macro, I'm becoming very partial to my Sigma 100-400mm-used with extension tubes. It becomes a very nice macro when used this way.

I have been using the Nikkor 200mm macro on the D300, D800 and now the D810 for a good number of years with great results, While its not cheap or light weight it is very sharp and gives you plenty of working room.

For flowers it's a tough choice between 35mm and 800mm. And actually about anything in between can do the job.

I’d love to see more examples of your flower shots noting which lens and/or camera it was taken with!
