I am an avid amateur with many, many years of experience with good "amateur" Nikon gear. I have gone from a Nikkormat, FMs, to a D90, now to a D7200 with kit lenses, and a new 200-500. I am certainly not rich, so am I missing out on a giant leap by not moving up to pro level gear...D850 etc. if I am not intending to sell my work, but I do strive for better, sharper work for my own satisfaction.

The first, and mayby most important person you need to satisfy is yourself. If you feel your current camera and gear is falling short, relative to your expertise and goals, then by all means, raise the bar in your choice of gear.

The D850 sounds great. You do have one full frame lens and one DX that we know of. If you are going to use DX lenses, the D7200 will put more pixels in the image than the D850. But, if you will be adding full frame lenses, the D850 should be real sweet. I have a D7200, and although it may not have all the newest technology, it is no slouch when it comes to image quality.

The D850 should be better in low light. If you plan on using the 200-500 for moving targets such as birds or ex wives, the D850 will focus faster.

Thanks, I do a lot of bird photography. So, your comments are helpful. Money is my greatest issue. I have noted all of the UHH praise for refurbs. That may be my best option.

Oh, and I'm on my 54th wife. I swap her out for a one year newer model of the same one every year.😁

Really? A 46 Mpix camera will not put as many pixels on the image as a 24 Mpix one? Images from a D850 are 8256x5504, the D7200 6000x4000. How is that more pixels?

For wildlife, a Dx camera and lens are better than a full frame. If you are doing landscape, then Full Frame is the way to go.

Yeah, really. When you put a dx lens on the D850 it will default to dx mode. The image will be less than 20mp.

Well, then, that’s where your money is. I’ve always heard: “follow the money”....

I guess I'll stick with my 7200 as it seems good for wildlife. BTW I love my 200-500, well worth my cost.

It's not the camera that will give you better, sharper work.
The D7200 is a very good camera, use it to learn how accomplish better, sharper work.

If you want to go D850 with good glass ....Get a second job to pay for it...You want sharper photos, ditch the kit lens and invest in better glass.

No ship likely to come in, no old rich uncle withme in a will, so I'm sticking with the D7200 and saving for good glass. The Nikkor AFs 18-105 3.5-5.6 VR that came with the D7200 seems to be great. Is it considered a "kit" lens? What about its quality? Thanks for your kind advice.

You have good gear. I own a DX camera with DX lenses, and one FX lens. If I were to go full frame, such as the D850. I would sell my DX lenses. Knowing, I can still use my DX lenses on the FX camera. FX glass belongs on a D850 for best resolution. Especially having 45.7 megapixels. Your Nikon 200-500mm is FX formatted.

Get a D500, and your 200-500 will be excellent for BIF. You can still use your DX lenses. Uses the same processor as the D850. Excellent in low light quick focus and 8 fps
