The depth of field is certainly better in this second image. I believe I like the composition better in the first.
Enjoyable shots, emotionally and technically. I like the first one much better, because the composition has a strong focal point, with the composition still leading the eye in and out and around through spotting of color and directional imaginary lines. It also has a good overview of the wear of the shoes, whereas just the back does not.
Not an out of the box still life, its creativity is refreshing.
I still like #1 best. It tells a story. #2 is more of a commercial for Shoe Polish.
